    Alternatrot 2007 Race Report

    5th Annual Aterna-Turkey-Trot

Boycotting our historic local 8K Turkey Trot, fellow trotter and I meet every year at our favorite trail running park here in WNY. This was an anniversary year ! The fifth running of the Alternatrot, and it was a great celebration of running, friendship, sharing and thanksgiving !

Day started out gray and rainy but not too bad temperature wise ... 40's maybe.  We had a record breaking amount of rain in the 24 hours before the start and it was still pouring when I left home.  I arrived early and put in a mile or so before the official start . . . checking out the trail and getting my feet wet.  My friend arrived, the rain stopped and we hit the trail.  It wasnt too muddy but the normally dry creek beds were flowing like I have never seen them before !!  We stuck to our usual Thankgiving day route called the Bridle Trail which is a nice jaunt along the ridge. It then heads into some deeper woods where there are a few little hills and several stream crossings.  The course goes up and down, into and out of the gorge several times. There were plenty of foot soakers and ankle deep submersions and there were also some very nice colorful leaf covered sections of trail for a bit of easy running.  Not sure how many miles we got in as we stopped for plenty of photos along the way and just had ourselves a fun time playing in the woods, visiting and enjoying each others company.

Weather turned colder in the second half, it began to get misty at the turnaround. Mist turned to sleet and it was actually snowing when we finished ! Just a light dusting though. We were very grateful that the park casino was open this year for post race festivities and it was toasty warm inside ! Participants received 5th Anniversary commemerative T-shirts a goodie bag and full Thanksgiving Brunch which included warm rum-n-cider ginger tea, Pizza flavored combos, extra spicy Slim Jim's, Cranberry muffins, specialty chocolates and apple pie !! Yumm !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|border=0!

Wow, Leslie.  It sounds like you really got a great deal!  Now there'll be no excuses to not post pics, though.

I've been keeping up with the weather report for Breckenridge, and they've been getting some snow the last few days. I may get my skiing trip after all. We leave early tomorrow. I think I'd also like to try some snowshoeing while we're there. I wanted to last year, but we never got around to it. Does anyoe know if you can run in shoe shoes, or is that strickly a hiking/walking thing?

Sure, you can run in snowshoes Lorrie-but it can be a lot of work!  A friend of mine has been snowshoe running for the past couple days and has been reminded of this fact.  Never mind that she was running uphill in them.  She trains by time and when she got back to the bottom (she was at a local ski area) she realized she went too fast so had to go up and down again!  I have snowshoes but so far have just walked in them.

Nice 5K PR Leslie and NY nice pics of your Alternarun. I had a beautiful day in CT-62 degrees and sunny! I went for about a 9 mile run at an Audubon center Thursday morning by myself. Sorry, no pics-didn't even carry any water. The only thing I carried was shirt tied around my waist because it was warm enough to!

Nice to hear from Greg too!-bummer the running isn't going well. I think you not only have to train to build up the miles; you have to train your body to recover as well. So hang in there Greg and keep up with the weights like you're doing and slowly add in some running. I know it's boring but the treadmill is a soft surface-you need the cardio to help burn off the whiskey belly. I'm a personal trainer and that's my free advice !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|border=0!

Enjoy the rest of the weekend everyone! Take a run or two for me Lorrie and Leslie have fun figuring out that camera !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|border=0!

Re: NTR ET (NEO's Nov. Thread)

Great pics guys!  Also, belated Congrats on the races/times!  One of these days, I will enter another race.

I am back from being off the rails for a while. I told myself that I would not push too hard and went for several trail walks/hikes instead of running. I finally did a 2 mile run at the HS track this past weekend and took it VERY slowly. I am pleased that I did it.

I still have that problem with my right knee going sore and stiff at about 1.5-2 miles. I wish I could stop it. I experimented with changing my running gait this last run and that seemed to help some. Perhaps this is the result of mechanical problems (sheesh, sounds like I am talking about my car). I plan to try some new things on my next run and see if it helps.

Zig, I am so impressed by your 5K time (and PR). I was happy to run 35 and change on mine a couple months ago.

Kelly, great job improving your time too. You are running 6K faster than I run 5, LOL! You may have been 80 out of 91, but I bet I would have been last.

I have a CRAZY BUSY week ahead of me, so I may not post until the weekend. I do not plan to be as scarce as I have been the last few weeks.

Nice to see everyone is getting out there these days ! Great pics

. I especially like the mushroom photo !

My friend and I visited the Catskill Mtns last week in New York State. We did some great hiking and a wee bit of trail running. Weather was great the first day, cold but clear n sunny skies. Day two brought clouds and a lot of rain ... along with the cold. The trails were both out and back trips up to the summit and then return. Both routes were quite rocky w/ some real technical areas and many creek crossings. There were also some easy sections where we couldnt resist a little running to keep warm. The whole Catskills area is very beautiful and we are excited about returning to do some more of the many, many trails there.

Here are the links to photos from each trail if you are interested -

Re: NTR ET (NEO's Nov. Thread)

Cool pics RunNY.  The Catskills looked nice-I have a view of the Adirondacks.

I don't have much else to tell. I spent the day in Stowe. The wind was howling and it was cold-in the teens-so I was a wimp and only skied one run. I waited until the afternoon to go for a 5 mile run on the rec path which was a little challenging being covered with ice and snow. I'll do a longer run tomorrow.

Everyone have a good rest of the weekend!

    Kelly
