walk breaks and 5k

I can run a 5k nonstop, but I am more of a middle distance runner. I have no desire to run a marathon or anything of the sort. Honestly, I don't care much for anything over 2 miles. I realize that I am a sprinter and I was wondering could walk breaks increase my timed 5k speed. Most races are 5k and above in length. And if I have to run the distance, I would like to play to my strength. Sprint--walk break--sprint--walk break etc.,

Re: walk breaks and 5k
In the Galloway Running book there is some discussion of doing just that on a 5k. If I recall it was a 10 to 15 sec walk break. It has some cursory evidence that walk breaks should help but I'm not an expert on this. There are lots of previous posts on this board I recall chatting about run-walk on shorter races so look back a bit.

I've not tried this on shorter runs (5k) but it has helped me with longer 10k, 1/2 and full marathons.

Good luck.

Re: walk breaks and 5k
Thanks for the information. I will look back. I may do a 10k one day. But I am very realistic with myself, I am a natural sprinter, with a heavy build. I run fast for my size over short distances. But I like Galloway's ideas. I recall a guy in the military who would stop completely, and still manage to run 2 miles in a little over 10 minutes.

Don't forget to take a GU at mile 1 of a 5K. It keeps you going in those last 100 meters.

Re: walk breaks and 5k
Although I like the walk breaks in distances above 10k I'm not a big fan and rarely advocate them for runners under a half marathon other than maybe true beginners or runners with various physical issues.

That being said if you feel the walk breaks will help you reach the finish line faster and/or injury free in the 5k and 10k races by all means use them.

Most people I see in a 5 and 10k race using walk breaks simply have misjudged their athletic skills and are surprised how much energy running takes. They are simply pooped and don't run on a regular basis.

Re: walk breaks and 5k
Mike T--what is a GU? 770 I can run a 5k. I can run 5 miles without walk breaks. Its just that I find a run to be more enjoyable when I take walk breaks. I enjoy interval training, I was so happy about Hiit when it first became vogue. I don't do hiit anymore; I decided to focus on more miles per week to lose weight. I have yet to time myself running hard with walk breaks. I understand what you are saying. I do believe that if I run nonstop, I may be able to run a 5k faster than if I used walk breaks. But I wonder if it is possible for me to run as fast if not faster using walk breaks. I am basically experimenting because I want to run faster. I realize that I am a fast twitch dominant (big) athlete. I would be more comfortable running a 40 yard dash than a 4 mile run. But who holds 40 yard races? Anyway, competition keeps me motivated. The desire to win against impossible odds is what drives me. And at 275 lbs I am going against some tough odds.

If you haveto stop that means you don't train right no matter what distance. A real runner never walks

Sure, and a real runner doesn't race in races they cannot expect to win either.

I don't have a problem with that. If walk breaks make running more enjoyable, use them to your best advantage.

Re: walk breaks and 5k

I have to agree with someone who wrote about this forum going down hill. Runners lift each other up and encourage not critcize. People come to a forum to get help. This is one of the thing that is wrong with people today not caring but their fellow man.

Sincerely,

John NY
