Knee Pain

After 2 miles my left knee flares up and gives me pain. I can walk but have a hard time running. I have iced and elevated for 3 days but every time I try to run the pain begins. I do not want to go to the doctor. They take an xray and if nothing is broken they tell you to ice and elevate for a couple of weeks and no running.

Re: Knee Pain
repeated pain for me turned out to be a torn medial meniscus.

If the pain is on the outsideo the knee, it could be ITB.

Either way, it is probalby connective tissue related (not, I am not an orthopedists but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Exprss last night). the joke only to point out that you are dealing with you own health and should seek licensed care.

If connective tissue related (muscles adapt to training stress first, connective tissue last), then back off on the stress, take more rest days and rebuild the volume (total weekly mileage) and stress (pace or individual run distance) more slowly.

Re: Knee Pain
I have had 3 knee issues in the past 20 years. All three were taken care of differently.

First was 20yrs ago in the army. My knee would swell, feel really tight and hurt. Knee surgery was recommended, but as a last ditch effort to avoid it, I tried custom arch supports and had no more issues

Second was a couple years back. At that time I was running and biking a lot and developed a pain that felt like someone was driving a nail into my knee. Turned out to be IT Band/Quad tightness which was pulling on the ligaments/tendons attached to the knee. At the recommendation of another runner, 5 minute deep quad massage and focused stretching helped over a couple weeks. Dig your thumbs into your quads for sensitive areas, if you find some try the above.

Third time was a year and a half ago. I had an interior tear to the medial miniscus (MRI showed it). The sport medicine orthopedist I went to was supposedly the best in town and oddly enough he had me run through it - which worked over a couple painful weeks. I DO NOT recommend this blindly. His told me that since he knew the problem, if running didn't fix it, he would just end up doing the same surgery anyway. He said 10% of the cases running through it worked. Again I DO NOT recommend doing this blindly.

Hopefully my second challenge is yours as well, and focused massage/stretching will work for you also.

God Luck

Re: Knee Pain
If you do a Google search on knee pain, you will find an almost overwhelming amount of information. I was able to diagnose my problem as an IT band problem. Stretching, massage and running a little slower have helped me build my distance back up. For massage, I use "The Stick". It works pretty well for me -- www.thestick.com.

For more info on IT band pain, see http://www.lwcoaching.com/library/runnersguideitbs.htm

Re: Knee Pain
Thank you for listing the great ITB site jrkahle! I suffer from the ITBS as well. That was a great article and I'm sure will help a lot of us out there. Last week I had my gallbladder removed and am only walking at this point! grrr. It may be the best thing that happened to my ITB! However......

I'll be using the exercises listed on the ITB site to get stronger and look forward to that 'first' run in the next few days/weeks! Hoping it's sooner than later!

Re: Knee Pain
I have a great product called Ramedica Herbal Wonder Balm that helps to relieve aches and pains. It is all natural and goes to a deeper level to relieve pain and promote healing. I have been bringing it in from Malaysia for over 5 years. People have great results and I have chiropractors, massage therapists, physiotherapists and many others who use and/or sell the product. It may not solve your problem completely, although I have had many people with sports injuries who have used it as a complimentary measure to get relief.
Go to www.terimakasue.com for further info.

Re: Knee Pain
On the topic of knee pain - I was suffering a similar (well aren't all pains similar to a point?) problem that after I ran my knee swelled up and hurt for a day or two, but I could definitely still walk on it. After jumping from doctor to doctor, an orthopedic nurse practitioner told me it was bio-mechanical and recommended me to an orthoticist. Turned out that due to several previous injuries and genetic quirks the bones in my left leg/foot are not aligned correctly and my left leg is about 1.5 cms longer than my right... All of the uneven pronation and strides was causing swelling in the knees, quite similar to IT related problems. A good (and unfortunately costly) pair of orthotics and some cross training, and I am good as new. I have not been running this fast since I was 19...

If the standard x-rays/mri doctor routines do not indicate that your meniscus is torn, etc, then go see a good orthoticist or someone who can diagnose your gait... It may be as simple as you are just in the wrong shoes...

Either way, good luck...

Re: Knee Pain
I have had bad knee pain it has been getting worse have trouble walking up and down stairs and running is a major problem. I am in the marines and pretty ****** off at the medical facilities. I have this knee pain since My schooling which was like November of 2005. I have not had it diagnosed at all I have been to a number of doctors at the medical facilities none of them have given me a diagnoses. I have been told i have arthritis or it could be tendinitis or its this or this. I have had 2 months of physical therapy with no relief of the pain and now they wan to send me to physical therapy again. I told them I had it for 2 months and it didn't help. What should I do

Re: Knee Pain
I've had this ongoing pain - I'm 38 and was told it sounds like my pain is due to osteo arthritis - so I got synvisc injections - and that didn't help - now I'm told it possibly may be because the mechanical dynamics of my knee joint is not genetically engineered so there is off friction pain due to genetically mis-alignment - and was told that orthotic shoe inserts may do the trick!!! So, I am hopeful and was recommended to try Phase 4 orthotic shoe inserts to align my knee joint so I won't have the continuous knee pain problem... Now, if I can only find the Phase 4 orthotic shoe inserts - they are hard to find...

Re: Knee Pain
I agree with that. That's one reason I have held back from doing a triathlon. I've had a few bike accidents (in the most serious one, I was knocked unconscious WHILE wearing a helmet) and I wouldn't want to repeat that experience.

Re: Knee Pain
I have beentrained in Stott Pilates to work in injury and special populations. I have seen a lot of runners come in with these and other issues. While running puts a lot of stress on the joints, running with improper biomechanics makes this much more dangerous to the joints. Instead of putting orthotis in the shoes, although this can be helpful and necessary at times, addressing the real issues such as improper muscle imbalances, faulty firing patterns and lack of a neutrally positioned pelvis and spine. I have worked with runners that were very accomplished in their sport including some Ironman athletes and due to these problems as well as running with hips in a medially or laterally rotated positioned or medially or lateral deviations in the pateller placement as well as host of other complaints I have found a lot of success in doing postural and gait analysis in correcting these problems with a proper Stott Pilates program that is specific to the individual. I own a studio in Portsmouth New Hampshire and there are other Stott studios around the country. Polestar is also a good Pilates that also is based on Sports medicine as Stott is. Godd luck with your knees! My web is www.spinlates.com if you have any questions. pilatesjill@gmail.com
