Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

man what a cold day! The pilots are off for the holidays so we washed planes today, the soap and water was freezing! 29 when I got to work this morning with 15 to 20 knt winds from the north, Suppose to be 17 here tonight and winds near 30! I seen 1 lady tring to run and the wind was standing her up and she was having a rough time. I decided a good day to rest from the 3 miles yesterday. I wouldn't want to over do it ya know! Not a wimp from cold weather or anything, just due a rest day!  LOL

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

Well DD and DW wanted to run so I was not about to wimp out.  Run start

14 degrees and windchill at 2 degrees.  Believe it or not it wasn't

that bad because the sun helped.  I forgot to turn my garmin on for a

while but DD's Ipod+ registered 6.4 miles by the time we finished, but

by my guess from when I turned on my garmin 6 miles.  I actually fell

today for the first time.  I tripped over my own shoelace not the ice.

I landed on my hip and shoulder then rolled perfectly to a seated position ( just like I learned in kindergarten), not too bad but it must have looked

pretty funny to the drivers on the roads.

monnik - glad to hear your hip is doing better.  It is cold out right now.

misswendy - I ordered my second pair of wave rider 10's, they will be

here by Friday.  Are you done baking those special deserts?  I should

have gotten a few recipes from you.  Now that I run more I can eat more

deserts.

Joe - I like Oklahoma as well.  How far are your long runs on Saturdays

now?  Steve Runner only lasts about 1/2 of the time, any other

thoughts?

Glueman - way to get the run in over lunch.  It was a bad day for the Illini.  Although Wisconsin's game wasn't great either.

DoubleGee - way to go on the long run!

deez4boyz - great 10k race.  It sounded like you had a great time.

cara - I'm so glad you are feeling better.  Way to get back to training with a 4.2 miler right away.

mara40thon - please send some of your weather.  44 degrees here is April.

chuck - way to take the day off after the tough 3 miler yesterday.

lol.  With that wind and the fact you ran 13 the other day you still

deserve the day off.  The cold doesn't bother me, but 30 mph winds

would.  Hopefully the weather will change soon for you.  When is your next 13 mile long run?

take care all.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

Hi everyone, oh my gosh, it looks like everyone is doing awesome, awesome, awesome on their running starting off the new year.  I must confess, I didn't run new years eve or new years day,  I was just in a funk, I told DH I could swear I had someones hangover, I know it wasn't mine because I only had 2 beers. Oh well, today was my first day back to work and it was so cold out.  I came home and jumped on the treadmill and ended up doing 7 miles.  I honostly didn't think I was going to make it to 2 miles but kept struggling thru it until I got my second wind.

SpicegeekI think it would be awesome to do the womans miniwhen is it?  and I would love some exercises for the upper body, send them my way, would you.  These flapping arms have got to go.

Looks like everyone has set some good goals for 2008

Runj-sorry to hear about your fall, I'm glad your alright.

Well to everyone else--great job guys.

Talk to you later

Sheila

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

Joe and runjr I'm going for OK also, Stoops coached defense for Florida awhile back. The QB for WV is from Daphne which is only 45 mints from here where my brothers live so I want him to have a good game also.

runjr, glad you didn't get hurt from your fall. It's great your family runs with you.  My son and I use to run together. He ran cc in high school. Also ran the 800m.

Sheila, my hangover was so bad maybe some of it made it to you. I couldn't even stand the smell of Rum or Tequila the next day. I was mixing those two and pineapple juice. I deserved to be sick I guess.

Spice geek, how's the eye candy guy doing? LOL,  Glad you're recovery is doing so good.

I'm going to have to write notes for shout outs, I forget by the time I get around to them. Anyway, I hope everyone is warm and safe. Be careful running, no more injuries.

Good night sweet dreams!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

New York City has a significant number of half-marathons. For over 20 years there has been the five-borough challenge, and when there was talk of canceling that there was an uproar and it was restored.  A HM in each borough, with 2 moved from the summer when they were traditionally furnaces to January and February.  So I'm next up for the Manhattan Half.  Plus there's the NYC Marathon, which is very expensive and runs through Times Square, and one in October.

I mention this because there's also the More Marathon and Half-Marathon, which is for women over 40 only except for the HM a woman under 40 can hook up with one over and both can run, although they need not do it together.  It's in April, and it has turned into a big event for my Club.  (We're in the suburbs just to the north of NYC.)  Last year I think we had 10 women compete, and we may have that many this year as well.  For many, it's their first real race.  We have one member who gets them to come out and cracks the whip to get them to train.  It's great to see people take the step from the standard 5K to the HM.

In addition, you can use a HM time to get guaranteed entry into the NYC Marathon, so we have a number of women aiming for that standard.  It's 1:37 for women under 40.

Finally, I learned how to embed videos.  Here's one of one of my favorites, Ryan Hall.  I personally could do without the religious aspect, but it is very important to Hall.  Plus it's a great workout.  Note how relaxed he carries his arms.  Relaxed arms,  relaxed upper body. My Club does lots of Repeat workouts to develop and maintain relaxation under workout and race stress.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

JP - Where are you ?? .. do you run a lot of the NYRR races ?? - I think I somehow missed you location. I really wanted to run the More Half this year but reality is I am not going to be recovered enough by April - I will run some of the later 5 borough halfs I hope - and I think I`ll aplly for the NYC Half again this year

Shelia - I sent you a private message with my e-mail - drop me a line and I`ll bore you to death with upper body work outs - but if you do them you`ll have kick *** sexy arms and shoulders !!

For those who asked the womens mini is in June - it was the second weekend in June last year so it will be around the same time this year.

My trainer is back from vacation so it was a weights day today - started on some leg stuff - very light - very depressing how much ability I have lost in a few short months - no eye candy siting since New Years Eve Chuck !!  guess I`ll just have to find a new distraction !!

wrap up warm all and take care on the ice - be safe and well

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

SpiceGeek,

I live just north of the Bronx.  I don't do that many NYRR races a year; I did 4 in 2007.  The NYC HM in August is so expensive and starts so early that I don't know if I'll do it.  I haven't done it yet.

Joe,

Turns out the way to post is to go into Plain Text instead of rich text.  And then all you need to do is cut and paste the embed from the video site and you have it.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

hey yall

missed a lot by only posting once yesterday.  i am still pretty depressed about missing the race.

figured out that in the last  5 months of 2007 i ran 295 miles.

joe....no i didnt register early b/c i never know what my family will be up to.  btw...love car talk.  havent listened in a while.  would be pretty hard NOT to laugh at those guys

chuck....rum tequila and pineapple sounds yummy.  easy to overdo.  i'm taking a break while the weather is cold here and my kids are not in school.

runjr...i am going to hopefully make another batch of cookies soon, because i havent done the jam thumbprints that i like so well.  hope your kindegarten roll saved you from any injury!

tommashe...my arms make me crazy too.  have to try to work on that this year.

mara40thon...please do not confuse my well wishes for you to have fun with pulling for florida.  i am a mississippi state university grad and will NEVER pull for the gators!!! lol.  hope  you had fun.  i do not care what other sec teams do.  GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!! my DH is like you, however, and pulls for sec whenever. ha

deez4boyz....great 10K!

GG....great 11 m run.  these are the race day hints my friend gave me:  dont do anything new or different.  relax.  have fun.  start slow and run at your pace. when you drink the water or gatorade, grab the cup by the top and pinch a corner.  then suck out a sip or two.  this way you dont get water/gatorade in your face or on your shirt.  haha

monnik....try a full service pump.  get goober to fill your tank for  you!  haha jk

spicegeek...no eye candy....bummer dude.  keep going on that slow return to running....

chamblin....will look you up on facebook after i post here.  great job getting back after the cold.

well, the kids are awake.  they slept late today.  have been going and going since school was out and they are tired.

love to all

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

joe, no offense, but hard to think of your weather as chilly when we might hit a high of 20 here today. And we're generally warmer than those of you in WI!

DOR for me today. Okay, let's call it what it was:  sleeping in! Don't know why I've been so tired, but I couldn't rally this morning (or last night). It wasn't a run day anyway; maybe I'll get something in tonight--besides packing up DD#2 for her departure in the morning, that is.

runjr, glad your fall wasn't too bad. I rolled my ankle about 3 months ago, and it still hurts when I sit cross-legged. Gotta be careful out there!

misswendy, the cookies sound good, but ours are gone and I'm not baking any more for a while. We need to get back to eating better. I did make an Irish Cream chocolate cheesecake for Christmas dessert that went over well (and also, fortunately, is gone now).

I miss the "review this thread" featurehard to keep track of everybody! Great running, thoughkeep it up!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Dec 30th

Hey Runners!  How are ya?  Glad to hear most of you have run more than me during 2008...I've run a big ZERO miles since the New Year began!  My last run was on Monday (12/31) - tues was an intended rest day & for various reasons I didn't run either yesterday (wed) or today (thurs)...EEK!  So, I've adjusted my run for tomorrow from 3.5M to 6.5M - perhaps in NEW shoes?  Going to the shoe store today (back @ work now!).

Although I haven't met my short-term goals this week, I did listen to a good podcast about setting goals/resolutions to share with you (you may have heard it already, but just in case...):

Set SMART goals = Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-oriented

Just a tidbit!  I'll write back tomorrow - after I RUN in my NEW shoes - will be first run for 2008!!!

Adios!  --Laurel
