No Motivation

I got to tell you, motivation to start jogging/walking is really hard. I have started and stopped too many

times with too many excuses. The problem is, its quite cold outside and its really hard to motivate myself

to go out into the cold to do this. The most I can do is maybe walk/jog around the block. I feel de-motivated in

everything else in life too. I feel really lazy. Is there some truth to the fact that when your out of shape you tend

to not want to be motivated in other areas of life?

Re: No Motivation
If it's too cold outside then find something you can do indoors. Treadmills, elliptical trainers, stationary bikes, etc. are your winter friends. And yes, once you get an established exercise routine established you will feel like you have more energy throughout the day.
Good luck!

Re: No Motivation

Innisfailrunner,

I have to say that as a runner for the past 30+ years I have first hand data that regular activity can be a positive influence on your attitude toward life in general. I have also done some research on the matter. It affects the firing of the synopsis in the brain too. The learning (thinking) process is improved with regular activity.

Now, how do we get you motivated to begin? Lets see....I have always considered myself part of a very special group; a charter member of something that not everyone wants, or maybe can, be a part of. This membership card takes on the characteristics of not eating everything that is on the menu, of being selective in the grocery store, of sleeping regularly, of running when everyone else may be still sleeping, of running when the no one else would even consider it because of the weather, etc.

Being an athlete is a state of mind and a lifestyle; not a new year's resolution. It is something that you do, not to loose weight, or be more positive about life, or feel better physically; it is someting you do because it is who you are. The other things are simply products of being who you are. Who are you Innisfailrunner? I am not asking who you want to be. I am asking who you are. If you answer is an athlete, then tomorrow you will have a new entry on the agenda. An entry that will find itself more regularly on your daily, weekly, and annual agendas, regardless of the weather or other things that we can use as excuses.

Who are you? I hope that you answer, athlete.

See you on the trails tomorrow?

Sincerely,

Paul828

Re: No Motivation
Many find the company of a running partner helpful. Try hooking up with someone who also wishes to begin running. Alternatively, find and joing a running group in your area that would provide support when your motivation sways.

Re: No Motivation
i have definately been where u are....the only thing that helps me get out of a rut is to set a new goal for myself. sometimes a new pair of running shoes (or whatever new purchase might get you motivated) helps, too :)

Re: No Motivation

enter a race. Anything. Set a goal. Put it on your calendar, and circle the date. Count the weeks to go. Anticipation can be a great motivator.

Believe me i've been where you are. It's hard sometimes to get out of that rut. I know how you feel. I am not a runner by "type". But i love everything about my life when i'm in that rut on the other side of the road: the one where you WANT to run, every day. And no matter what type you are, i am here to testify, it is possible to get into that other rut. Running is a lot like riding a bicycle, or a horse, or whatever simile you wish: just get back on. Don't beat yourself up about where you've been; just get back on.

I've had a terrible messed-up workout schedule over these holidays, and i've got a 1/2 marathon in two and a half weeks. It probably won't be a steller time (like i said, i'm not really the "runner type"; but i would like to improve...) No matter; I will finish! no matter what. That's what i love about running: no matter where you've been, or where you're going, it's all "one foot in front of the other". There is absolutely no other way to do it.

Good luck. and have fun out there. one step at a time :o)
