Energy Gel Alternative?

I am scheduled to participate in my first 1/2 IM this summer, and my last 2 marathon experiences with Energy Gels have not been good. Even with copious amounts of water to dilute them, they are way too sweet and upset my stomach. Could anyone suggest alternative foods or are there energy gels that are not so sweet/more digestible?

Check out carbopro here: http://www.nvo.com/sportquestdir/

I swtiched from gels long ago to this. You can easily get 1000 (more or less depending on your race) calories in one bottle as opposed to trying to have 10 gels stashed in a bento box on your bike. Much cleaner and easier to get to. Plus use it on the run.

Re: Energy Gel Alternative?
I have used Hammer Perpetuem as my only calories on the bike with great results. Its complex carbs are easy on the stomach and also allow you to mix the calorie concentration you need per bottle. It really simplifies things. I have gone to hammer gel (again, no simple sugars, better on the stomach) but have been intrigued by carbo pro premixed bottles. Niemsco, you have used this on the run as your main (only?) calorie source? I have planned to try this and am curious. Have you tried the carbo pro 1200 bottles?

Re: Energy Gel Alternative?

Itri, I haven't used the premixed 1200 bottles, just the powder and mix it in with a bit of Gatorade and water. I have used this as my only source for carbs on the run. In IM I also took bananas and pretzels on the run as I got tired of taking the same thing 6+ hours. I do use the thermolyte with it, on bike and run.

Re: Energy Gel Alternative?
Thanks. I plan to try fluid calories only for the whole race this season (with the exception of pretzels, etc). I have been doing fluid calories only on the bike. While the hammer gels are good on the stomach I have found that late in the run during an IM that the consistency make it very hard to get down.

Re: Energy Gel Alternative?

All,

Has anyone tried pure maple syrup? I tried this last season and found it to be a wonderful change from gels. I put it in my Goo flask and used the same portions, it tastes really good, is a little more liquidy and goes down a whole lot better. Another great thing is that it is cheaper(in bulk), compared to gels, and has more carbs than most gels. go for the grade B if you want more of a maple flavor.

Last months issue of Triathlete mag had listed a gel comapny I hadnt heard of before called eload. Their big thing is that they are nuetrel Ph so they are easy on the stomach. May want to give them a try.

Re: Energy Gel Alternative?
I know this is a bit late but one thing I've been trying recently which is pretty easy to carry on the bike is prunes. 3 or 4 at a time are pretty easy to get down and dont have a negative impact when i start the runs. They also have a great balance of carbs and protein and relatively little fiber so not much waste. It might also be a mental thing but eating real food is also nice! I've heard raisins have a similar effect.

Re: Energy Gel Alternative?
You could always try a homemade concoction! Take a look at this story: Make Your Own Homemade Energy Gel. It's worth a shot. After tasting the mint chocolate chip flavor that Gu released last year around the holidays, I'm tempted to do my own with melted Andes mints...

Also, you may want to try out the Honey Stinger products. I haven't tried them, but I imagine they're better for your stomach than 100 percent chemical gels.
