Best way to Detox and start anew???

I eat disgustingly bad food. I am making a change. What are your best tips? I'm open to anything except chugging turbo colon cleanse. Just need some tips to get going.

Try eating six meals a day -- every 2 - 3 hours. Each meal would consist of one serving size of lean meat, fish, or poultry; a cup of vegetables; occasional fruit; and a healthy fat (avocados, nuts, light cooking oils). Try to avoid any processed foods such as candy, cookies, soda, white breads, ect. Drink plenty of water and/or green tea every day.

Consulting a nutritionist is always a top on the list if you are very serious...

Most aren't that serious though so you can do simple things to eat healthier

First !

Absolutely no more fast food. It's done. That's the past. Never again.

Second.

Incorporate vegetables or often missed food groups, believe me it's a shock at first, don't think one day, "Ok vegetable time" and put a heap of brocolli or greens on the side of your plate and think that you'll be feeling the benefits, you won't, often you'll be greeted by stomach pains and a feeling of discomfort after eating a lot of vegetables if your body isn't used to them... It's a gradual sort of introduction, start small, never big.

Third.

Good snacks, and fewer binges.

Hungry? Try a fruit cup or eat a peanut butter sandwich, high protien and healthy alternatives go a long way and you'll notice that you aren't as hungry by the time dinner rolls around which can be good if you are wishing to get healthier and lose weight...

That's how my dieting works, I eat snacks and try high protien meals, you'll notice you aren't as hungry but are getting the energy you need to still perform well.

Just some tips.

Re: Best way to Detox and start anew???
Stay away from diets! They are a temporary solution to a long term problem. Going on a "diet" gives you the illusion that you are somehow going to be healthier and lose weight. Yes, you might lose weight. but 95% of all dieter's gain all the weight back (and more) within a short period of time. What's healthy about that?? If you go back to eating the same foods that got you fat in the first place, you have taken three steps forward and four steps back!

What you need is a lifestyle change and it sound like you are well on your way to making it happen. This is a permanent change. Not temporary! So, keep it up! You cannot out train a poor diet. It sounds like your food choices are having a positive affect on your athletic performance. Go through your pantry and throw out all your junk food. Replace it with fresh fruits and vegetables. Keep raw almonds and peanuts around too. They have the right kind of protein and fats that your body needs. Start learning the difference between a good carbohydrate (complex) and a bad carbohydrate (simple). Learn the difference between good fats and bad fats.

Let me recommend a good book on the subject. It is called, Healthy For Life by Dr. Ray Strand. In it, he explains how to detox and start anew with an emphasis on permanent lifestyle changes that result in a long healthy life.

The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Reverses its Position on Vitamin Supplements

Reversing a longstanding policy on vitamin supplements, the Journal of the American Medical Association announced last month that it will begin advising all adults to take at least one multivitamin pill each day. The last time the journal made a comprehensive review of vitamins, about twenty years ago, it concluded that normal people shouldn't take multivitamins. Most people, it was believed, could obtain adequate amounts of these nutrients from their diet.

According to Drs. Fletcher and Fairfield of Harvard University who wrote JAMA's new guidelines, "most people do not consume an optimal amount of all vitamins by diet alone". "Sub-optimal intake of some vitamins, above levels causing classic vitamin deficiency, is a risk factor for chronic diseases and common in the general population."
So, aren't all vitamins the same? According to a six year study by an independent lab at Nutrisearch, there are huge differences. In an effort to help the average consumer to seperate the wheat from the chaff, they evaluated over 2000 different supplements as to their quality and effectiveness. Read my review of this study on my blog by clicking on the following link.

Dr. Oz is often a guest on Good Morning America and the Oprah show. Here is a link to his recent appearance on the ABC news program and what he had to say about vitamins.

What a shameless plug (spam) for Usana products. That being said, most of the info you've posted within this thread loses all credibility with me.

Re: Best way to Detox and start anew???

I joined a workout group (Crossfit, http://www.crossfit/), but more to your question I started with the South Beach book and have really cut back on sugar and carbs. Has worked for me, I dropped 14 lbs including the muscle lbs I am adding with Crossfit. South Beach, Paelo - all pretty easy to follow lifestyles.

This is from the Morris County (NJ) crossfit site

Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat. Practice and train major lifts: Deadlift, clean, squat, presses, C&J, and snatch. Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstand, pirouettes, flips, splits, and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc, hard and fast. Five or six days per week mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense. Regularly learn and play new sports.

Works for me

Re: Best way to Detox and start anew???
Serious issue for me. It is just smack dab in the middle of my Boston training & my GI system is sensitive to change. I love & eat : chocolate (any form), mac n' cheese, drink Sprite & Sam Adams more than I should, would love to change 2 cup a day coffee to tea, & my veggies are severely lacking. I put the juicer & blender on the counter and have started to use it but not as consistently as I want. Whah Whah Whah. Also to moan some more: I work some 12 hour night shifts at the hospital & there is always JUNK to eat right in front of you. It is so hard but I am determined to get back on track. Any tips?
