2008 Olympic Marathon (also 18 yo chinese female runs 2:22)

Okay, it is 2008 and the olympic marathons will be interesting... and I wonder whether what happens in London will impact the field at the games.

On a related note from The Science of Sport blog (http://scienceofsport.blogspot.com/2008/01/running-news.html): Zhang Yingying, running her third marathon at the age of 18, has qualified for the Chinese Olympic squad by winning a marathon in Xiamen, in a world junior record time of 2:22:38.

Are you kidding me??? An 18 year old girl ran 2:22? Holy ****! I tried to look up info about Xiamen, and it looks like the air quality is better than Beijing. Dunno where she trains though, so who knows what kind of acclimation the Chinese may have to bad air and the expected heat in Beijing? The Chinese may be posing a serious challenge to the usually strong Japanese womens team. I guess that chinese herbal medicine stuff really does work!!! ;)

Consider the fact that Zhou Chunxiu ran the fastest time in 2007 and won London. She also managed a silver at the Osaka World Championship while being injured as well as undertaken an internal surgery just weeks before Osaka, I think the Japanese women can't match the Chinese women now. With great fan support, Toza from Japan managed a bronze by giving every last drop of energy she had and outran a new Chinese marathoner in the last mile. All the other Japanese runners performed not very well in their home turth in Osaka 07.

Kenya still have probably the best team in women Marathon but I think Paula is going to win gold in Beijing if she is healthy.
