Joe--so sorry to hear you had a bad race.  You finished and thats a huge accomplishment, be proud of that

Peg--way to go girl, your pic looks great, it looks like your really enjoying yourself.  Good job

Oh my gosh, I rememer how sore an broke down I was after my first half in Nashville.  I swear after the concert I honostly didn't think I was going to make it down the stairs and back to the hotel..

It's worth it though, you'll always remember that feeling of crossing the finish line.

runj--take care of that hip, I feel like a wimp, I'm only running about 16 miles a week right now, trying for 20 this coming week.

hope everyone had a great weekend

Re: 1/2 marathon trainers Jan 13th

runjr...great run.  take it easy on hip.  yes, those extra miles may have done it.  first time i went over 10m for a long run it was unplanned, i was only scheduled for 8.  boy did it pay for it!  also, did not stretch out enough b/c i was with a new group and was a little embarrassed in front of them.  not smart.  my knees paid for the extra miles and inadequate stretch/cooldown.  ohwell, lesson learned.

choppersean...AWESOME!!!!! your time was great....i'm sure you will keep improving as time goes on.  the flat course was great, right?!  you are a great runner!  hope you hang around!

Re: 1/2 marathon trainers Jan 13th

Now that the Giants have beaten the hated Cowboys, here's last week's thread .

Mixed results today.  Some happy.  Some sad.  That's why we play 'em.

Joe.  Sometimes it's just not your day.  Something similar happened to a Clubmate last year at the Manhattan Half (where it was cold, at about 20F (I ran it too and felt a bit guilty because the lines for the port-o-sans were long and he offered to get my bag to baggage so I could, just, make it to the start before the horn and he was a couple of minutes late but that wasn't such a problem because the race used chip-time except that he found himself behind tons of people at the start and so, in a sense, I was the cause of his being late except that I don't feel that guilty because he did, after all, have his own bag to be sent to baggage and I did let him wear my club T-shirt because he was a new member and hadn't gotten a singlet yet and it was months before I got that T-shirt back, but I ramble.)  He was pumped to blow the roof off the joint, but he too had some issues at the start, including the zigging and the zagging, and ended up running very poorly.  He was quite despondent about it, and I told him it happens.  And it turned out that it was an outlier.  Worst race of the year for him, and he came back not long afterwards and, well, blew the roof off the joint, meeting his sub-1:30 target with ease.

I tend to view the HM as taking care of itself.  In other words, I tend to run it based upon my training, and this mind-set helps keep pressure off of me.  I don't get as nervous as I do with shorter stuff like a five-miler or 10K.  But it's useful to remember that we are sometimes on a fine line and that a little problem early can cause big problems later.

So congrats to all the finishes.  As we all know, running a half-marathon is something to be proud of.

Re: 1/2 marathon trainers Jan 13th

Black Sunday (at least for me)  We went to the sport bar to watch the 2nd half only to watch the Cowboy's lose!!  Gotta cheer for the Packers now!

Marilyn - Sorry I didn't hear you!  Maybe we can get together for a run sometime anyhow.

Peg - Sounds like you had a great experience!  Good job on setting that PR!  Hope that steak dinner was good!  Where at?  Saltgrass?  Texas Roadhouse???

Chuck - The only good thing about the race was the weather!  As usual, Mother Nature did her part....

Runjr - Yes I did finish....   Great running on your part!

MissWendy - You are too kind....

Sean - Great race man!  Yes, really awesome!

Sheila - Thanks, yes I did finish but it wasn't pretty.  Maybe racing that 13.1 mile distance 3 times within 4 months had something to do with it.

JPGarland - Hated Cowboys?  I don't!!  As for mixed results, there weren't any between mine and the Cowboy's....

Re: 1/2 marathon trainers Jan 13th

just checking in.

choppersean - great run, congrats and get some rest!

sheila - I am going to back down my mileage again to 35-40 miles per week.  I think in the long haul it will help.

misswendy - I agree with you this week was a lesson learned.  I had two long runs over 11 miles and that was not smart.  I will take it easier and just go for one long run a week.  I should really start a better cool-down and stretching routine.  I just finish running and forget about the stretching many times.  I just go to look for food because I have earned it??? lol.  I think most everybody likes Favre is not only because he is a great football player but he is so genuine.

joe - Green Bay is going to need your help.  I actually wanted to see if GB could win in Dallas.  Now I have to hope for snow again for game time.  Do you have another HM scheduled?  I'm thinking of adding a second HM in April and then follow-up over Memorial Day.  That may be too aggressive and I should watch it as I kinda broke down late this week.

take care all.

Re: 1/2 marathon trainers Jan 13th

Hey all you RUNNERS! I've been missing "talking" with you guys during the 2nd half of last week - this week will be better - for chatting and for running - went into a bit of survival mode with DH gone & balancing work/3 kids/home stuff all alone ("sniff!") - anyhow, the treadmill did not work out for me at all - I think it's b/c it's just not a good one - borrowed it from my parents & it's pretty old!

OK - so I went back and read through the postings from the end of last week & ran today's so far. Here are a few shout outs:

MONNIK - YES - I read about your front row seats @ the Obama rally! (JEALOUS!) I have not traditionally voted for many dems either - this year WILL be an exception...genuinely appreciate Obama - been following him since the 2004 speech at the Dem convention!

JOE - So sorry for the disappointment! The main thing is that you went out there and ran - not your best, not your plan - give yourself some grace - it's OK! Remember, tomorrow is a new day! PEG - So glad you enjoyed yourself! Such nice weather - was thinking about you and JOE this a.m. during my own run - funny, was one of the few runners in the neighborhood today - most likely they were all out there running with you and JOE, rather than here in Pearland!!

SEAN - You are FAST, my goodness, WOW! Great report...DENISE - Wanna hear from you too!

MISSWENDY - What a fabulous DH you have! How was the date - would LOVE it if my DH did that, I'm always the one arranging for babysitters & I procrastinate, so it's not an easy task, once I actually get around to it!

SPICE - YAY! Back to running...I know you're happy!

CARA - How were the parties??

MARA40THON - WAY TO GO - Sounds like the HM was great!

MARILYN - Good job on the weekend 12Miler - your run is coming up quickly, isn't it? Aren't you running the 3M in Austin?

RUNJR - How's the hip? CHUCK - Great run today - 12M (like Marilyn!) - good for you!!

I ran 6M this a.m. - was glorious - so nice to be back outside! Finally listened to a SteveRunner podcast today - thanks for the suggestion! It was the last one for 2007 - was pretty good!

OK - off to bed - getting up far too early to be staying up this late...won't I ever learn?

JOE - I can still hear you berating yourself - STOP IT! --Laurel

Re: 1/2 marathon trainers Jan 13th

HI all,

I've had trouble logging in but got in fine tonight - maybe the problems are being resolved.

Just wanted to offer congratulations to Joe, Peg and Sean on their finishes.  You all ran 13.1 miles - nothing to sneeze at or put down!!  Some days are just easier than others.

Sean, I have a friend who is a native Arizonian who commented how "cold" the PF Chang half was!!   I was laughing hearing about her 3  underarmour shirts at the start - I would have been dying of heat at those temps in all those clothes!

Sorry about the Cowboys but I am so psyched about a Packer home game.  Long term weather forecasts are predicting a high of 4 degrees that day - hope the Pack is prepared!

Congrats again!  Mary

Re: 1/2 marathon trainers Jan 13th

Hey Mary - Great comment - all should be proud of completing the HM - TRULY!

I do, however, feel your frustration a teensy weensy bit this am, JOE.  My HM is in 12 wks, so today was my 1st "official" training day of the 12 wk. training program...was MISERABLE!  Weather was nice - about 40F, not much wind - ran with my running partner & let her run without me after 1st mile, as my right knee/hip/ITband area started really bothering me about that time...started walking, then resumed running, ran through the pain, and then was somewhat "limping" while running @ the end...UGGH!!!!!!!!

Failed to mention in my last post that I did focus on cross-training a bit last week - pilates & strength training - anyone ever heard of the "foam roller"?  Supposedly good for "myofascial release" with issues like IT band & lower back pain/SI joint...picked one up...will keep you posted!

Hope you all have a really good Monday!

Laurel

Sean - wow!  what a great race.  That is awesome.  Way to go.

Well, I am not going to be wearing heels to work today. HAHA.

You guys are awesome.  I am so glad we have a great group.  I will try and check in later.

Joe - keep your chin up.  You going to do the Seabrook trails in March?  Laurel?

joe...black sunday....ha...glad you can cheer for the pack. should be fun

runjr...yes, you do earn that food! ha....that feeling is getting me in trouble! i think it is so hilarious watching a mississippi boy playing football on the frozen tundra....lol!

lspence...dont know what i would do without DH. we had a nice dinner, thanks. hey--great crosstraining, supermom...! sometimes walking/running through those tough days is the only way, then later in the week you hit your stride, so to speak.

marflair...are you getting to go to the packers game? wow. glad you finally logged in .

peg...the seabrook trails looks fun... ihave been trying to find a race that weekend. i will have moved up an age group and it will be spring break. but i think it may be too far for us to travel. sounds like fun race, though.

well the kitchen is calling. it needs to be cleaned. woohoo!

Re: 1/2 marathon trainers Jan 13th

Good morning everyone!

Well I guess it was my turn to get sick .  Last Tuesday I picked up some kind of 'ugly bug'  I hadn't been sleeping well and just felt awful.  Coach suspended my running after Wednesday, and told me to not run until I started sleeping better, and felt better.  Well I'm better now....  So yesterday I ran 20 minutes.  It felt good.  I really missed running.  First time since I hurt my Achilles last summer that I'd taken so much time off.  I'm glad that's over.  I'll be running 30 minutes this afternoon, 40 minutes tomorrow.

Congratulations Joe, Peg, and Sean on your races!  Peg, the pic was great!  (One of my wishes is to always be 'smiling' when I run.)  Great time Sean!  Joe, great finish!  It may not have been your best, but be thankful you can still get out and run!

runjr,  Wow! 50 miles in a week!  take is easy with that hip though...

Well I gotta get to work, good luck to everyone today with your runs!

Re: 1/2 marathon trainers Jan 13th

hi all, I hope the racers are resting today.  just a quick check in.  I might be running early evening today.  The hip feels okay today so I will give it a go.

laurel - glad you are back running outside.  For Steve Runner I like the stories of past runners.  It is so motivating to hear what some people go through and overcome.  It puts things into perspective.

misswendy - hope you get your run in tonight.  The temps are going to get really cold later in the week here just in time for the game this weekend.

kevee - glad to hear you are back and feeling better.

macd - sorry about your Colts.

take care all

Re: 1/2 marathon trainers Jan 13th

Joe, Peg, Sean, Denise - I hope you are all taking a much-needed rest today.  I have decided to schedule a massage the day after my HM.

Laurel - yes, I'm doing the 3M in Austin and it's coming up in just two weeks.  I'm getting pretty excited about it.

misswendy - thanks! I am still amazed just thinking about the 130 lbs. that I've lost. When I started out losing, I wanted to lose this much and more, but I don't think I really believed that I could.  I was actually very happy with 100 and basically went into maintenance mode for about a year after that.  Then I decided to start running and that's how I lost the additional 30.  It's like I have a whole new life.

I have to tell all of you a funny story from yesterday.  When Joe was calling my name on the flip side trying to find me during the HM, my daughters (ages 8 and 12) heard him and tried to get my attention.  When I got over to them, Joe had already passed, but they both wanted to know how I knew him.  When I told them he was from an online running group, they both told me, "Don't you know you're never supposed to meet someone in real life that you met online.  That's dangerous!"  LOL!  I guess I have taught them well.

Today was a strength training day for me, but tomorrow I'll be back on the road.

Marilyn
