needed inspiration

Hello there,

I have recently been working out consistently for the first time in my life (I am almost 26). Recent news of cancer in my family has given me a wake-up call as to how healthy I am, or am not, as the case may be. I have been working for about 2 months and the results are coming, slowly. I have even more recently started the couch-to-5K running prgram. I am just wondering if anyone has had good (or bad) experiences with this. Or maybe just has any words of wisdom. I am not on a "special diet"; just working on eating healthy, well-balanced meals, while cutting fats & sugars. I should also mention that I am not severely obese (about 20 lbs heavier than I'd like) and I have exercise-induced asthma. Thanks so much for any input!

Re: needed inspiration

Good morning -

Congrats to you! That is awesome that you're on the way to fitness and a healthy lifestyle. Although I am much older than you (43 - sigh) I too have changed my lifestyle. I am a cancer survivor but ironically I did not have a life changing experience after I survived it. I was STILL hard-headed and continued packing on the pounds and doing NOTHING whatsoever to change it. It's been a slow evolution for me and I've recently lost 20 lbs and feel like that really helped me as far as giving me the motivation to concentrate on a new and healthy lifestyle. I have just started the C25K program and I won't lie.....I am not having a lot of fun but only in 3 sessions I can see where it is getting easier. Take it from someone that almost gave up....it is well worth it and your body (and mind) will thank you for it later in life. Keep up the good work!

Re: needed inspiration
Well, I did the "couch to 5K" and I was really surprised that I even finished it, but I sure am glad that I did. I am on of those people who decide to get into shape for about a week and then quit. This time I decided to really do it! I am about 20 pounds overweight and I am 39. I was completely out of shape when I started the program and could barely run the 3 minute intervals. I finished the program (9 weeks) and I can now run three miles without much trouble. It is amazing!!!! I haven't really lost much weight though, I can however see changes. I am now starting to eat a more balanced diet in hopes of shedding the extra weight. I just wanted to let you know that the program does work! I haven't ever run three miles in my life. I also downloaded a pod cast on itunes by Robert Ullrey and he has set the program up with music and tells you when to walk and run. It is a free download. If you are interested keep in touch and let me know how you are doing.

I am on week 5 of the same running program. If you have an iPod I highly recommend downloading Robert Ullrey's podcasts. He set the entire program to music and keeps time for you. I would not be as far as I am today without it. Good job on starting your fitness. This is a great time in your life to start.

Re: needed inspiration

HI I'M 44 AND AM RUNNING MY FIRST 5K THIS WEEKEND. NEVER THOUGHT I'D SAY I ENJOY RUNNING BUT ITS TRUE. 2 YEARS AGO AT 5'5" I WAS 230LBS NOW I AM ABOUT155-157 (DEPENDING ON DAY AND EATING HABITS) BUT IN GENERAL I ENJOY EATING AND LIVING A MUCH HEALTHIER LIFE. WENT SNOWBOARDING LAST WEEK WITH MY 19 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER. SHE HAS TAKEN UP THE PATH TO HEALTH AND HAPPINES THROUGH EXCERISE AND NUTRITION AS WELL.

WHAT A BLESSING TO SHARE THIS WITH OTHERS AND HEAR THIER STORIES OF CHANGE AND HOPE. GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND KEEP AT IT!!

Re: needed inspiration
I am 45 with 4 boys (24,21,17 and 16) and am making the decision to get myself back to good weight and health. I am probably 80 pounds overweight and have decided I want to attempt a few 5K events this summer. I went out yesterday and walked 3.5 miles and it helped my mood intensely. Today I got my bike out (after a year in the garage) and biked 3.5 miles! My worry is that I will lose the enthusiasm and let my family duties outweigh what I need to do for myself. I guess what I am truly looking for is support from people who have done this before and stuck with it. Thanks!!
