    Smell the burning flesh

    Taste the savory cinder

    Volcano season

It is officially hot here in Mississippi!

    for Vicksburg poem.

Not nearly as poetic as yours, but the simultaneous battles of Gettysburg and Vicksburg have always intrigued me.  I've never been to Vicksburg, but I always wanted to make a pilgrimage.  However, after reading Confederates in the Attic (I hope the underline function worked), I was sad to read that it has been completely commercialized.  I would love to hear thoughts of anyone who has been recently.

My ancestor died during the month and a half long siege of Vicksburg and before the end which overlapped the battle of Gettysburg.  It was much more like Petersburg would be the next year.  It is really hard to preserve urban battlefields.  My great aunt lived near the Manassas battle sites for years and saw the ongoing struggles between developers and preservationists.  Sites that are beyond urban sprawl can be amazing, though.  Shiloh on a quiet spring day is worth hours of walking and contemplation.  My Vicksburg ancestor was from Illinois but had cousins still in Tennessee wearing gray and others in Kentucky in both Union and Confederate uniform.  My mom's relatives included one who died at Andersonville and another who survived and made sure his son's middle name was Sheridan.  That son's first daughter's middle name was Lee, however , and she married a Grant.  The Richmond area still does weird things to my brain.  Somehow seeing road signs for Mechanicsville or Cold Harbor takes me out the present more than optimally for safe driving.........
