Bode Miller became the most successful US skier on the World Cup circuit with a combined victory over the weekend. Miller, at 30 years of age, has overtaken Phil Mahre's 27 record World Cup victories, achieved at the end of the 1970 and through the 1980s.
Do you think this will help Miller shed his reputation as being irresponsible and not disciplined enough from the past?
Bode Miller definitely doesn't have the best reputation, but he does absolutely get it done on the slopes. I think much of his reputation comes from the fact that he has done things differently then most from the day he was born. He isn't going to stop now either so he'll continue to do things his way. In all honesty, his way seems to be working too, which might also frustrate people and especially those who wanted him to conform. He falls more then any other world champion, but he also wins more then most too. Coaches have begged him to change his style, but Bode does it his way. He's also one of the few skiers to participate in, let alone be a medal contender in all 5 disciplines. I think his recent accomplishments which have made him the most successful US skier on the World Cup circuit will help his reputation. It's one thing to go against the grain and fail, that's what people expected would happen to Bode, but it is quite another to go against the grain and become the best. People have to start to trust his way and give him some slack now. They can't change him.
Here's a cool video I found about Bode Miller.
