I just read an article that listed the top 16 Super Foods for Women. I'm listing them below and was sort of shocked by some of them. What do you think? What would you add or subtract? Does anyone have more details about WHY these foods are good for women?
Extra-lean Red Meat
Salmon
Spinach
Berries
Wheat Germ
Tomato Paste
Nonfat Yogart
Sweet Potatoes
Oranges
Old-fashioned Oatmeal
Curry
Ginger
Black Beans
Tea
Fresh Herbs
Dark Chocolate
Unless you really LIKE black beans, sweet potatoes, and tomato paste, toss. Lots of extra carbs.
Curry was a good one-spices raise the metabolism, the hotter they are, the more your body temp raises and burns calories.
Spices also have tons of antioxidants, and are great for providing lots of flavor without having to add fat and salt to accomplish this.
Grapefruit and vinegar are one of those urban legends for weight loss but I think its mostly the diuretic properties-great for that time of the month anyway.
Coffee or tea--caffeine does improve mood and metabolism.
Tofu-almost all protein.
Switch from white rice to brown--it is so filling you will eat only half the amount and feel full for hours!
Nice that's good info. Also, I thought the tomato paste was a little weird anyway, I'm happy to toss that and keep curry. Yum! ![]()
Pumpkin is also a superfood that should be included... It is low in calories and high in fiber! Check out Hungry-Girl.com for info on how to modify recipes to bake with pumpkin puree.
I have found a subsitute for brown rice, if like me, you get tired of having that with every meal, you can get barley, and cook it in different low-sodium or sodium free broths. Its very filling and satisfying, and doesn't taste much different than brown rice.
That's a good idea! I've never had barley. I'll have to try it.
I have no idea why anyone would say that meat was a super food. This is just wrong. Maybe they meant that if you much eat meat, make sure that it's Extra-lean?
Yes Anna, black beans, sweet potatoes, and tomato paste, are very goof for you carbs.
