Beginner Triathlete

Hey i'm a highschool distance runner who is interested in doing some triathlons, issue is i have no idea where to start training wise (majorly for the swimming portion)

Recently i've been going to the pool a couple of times a week and kind of just swimming without direction, i found that starting swimming is a lot harder then it looked, and it didn't look easy in the first place.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It would be best if you could take some swim lessons. They are not that expensive for a set of 1/2 hour lessons. There are also other options. For some online videos you can start with http://www.goswim.tv/ You may also want to pick up Total Immersion book (Revised). It will get you relaxed in the water. Also Triathlon 101 is a great intro book that covers the basics of triathlon.

Re: Beginner Triathlete

Sounds like you've already have an advantage being a distance runner. It's great that your looking to cross train with triathlons. Looking into swimming early will definately give you an edge. It's a part of the sport that is usually overlooked by many triathletes. Lessons would be great just to get some good swimming form down Another idea would be to to find a local triathlon group in your area and train with them on their swims (openwater/pool). Definately would help to get some tips from people who are already doing what your looking to do.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your swimming.

I would agree - you need to find either a tri club or a master swim club - they will stop you wasting time and point out your problems

One thing is that from a running back bround you are likely to have quite tight shoulder muscles

Look for a book with some shoulder stretches in to build up your flexibility. We use a book called "sport stretch" by Michael J Alter. You can find it on amazon. Ours has a picture of a gymnast on the from but is waaay old

The good thing is - you can do this while you watch tv etc

Hey. I saw your post. This video might be useful for your swimming. Six-Time Ironman Champion Dave Scott demonstrates several techniques to help ensure you're getting the most from your swim strokes. How has it been going?
