Question/Advice for getting into New York

I'd like to run the NYC marathon in 2009 not 2008. My question is, should I register this year in hopes of not getting picked so maybe next year I'll have a better chance. Or is it possible if I did get picked this year that I could trade that with someone for a slot next year? Or am I pretty much just SOL and I get in when I get in. I have a friend that wants to run it as well and we'd like to run it the same year but not sure how we go about that. Any suggestions?

I believe that once in, you can defer to the next year. I am in via guarantted entry for 2008 and was given instruction on how to defer but I think regardless of how you get in, you can defer to the next year. So, apply this year.

Re: Question/Advice for getting into New York
How tough is it to get a slot at NYC? My recent marathon put me off only by a few seconds for the guaranteed entry...too bad. When does the race typically fill up? Before I try for a spot I have to see if I'm for sure headed to grad school on the east coast! Thanks!

Re: Question/Advice for getting into New York
New York Road Runners uses a lottery system for entries into the marathon, but there are some exceptions where entry is guaranteed. One way is to meet certain qualifying time standards for a half marathon or full marathon, another way is to be a member of New York Road Runners (NYRR) and run 9 qualifying races throughout the year (and in addition for 2009 guaranteed entry, you must volunteer for at least one race) - of course, this is generally only possible if you live in the New York area, another way is to run for a charity program, and the last way is through an international tour group. It is my understanding that for the lottery, the percentage of applicants accepted from the New York area is lower than for other areas. Hope this information helps, and good luck!
