Off season weight...

Is it true that for most athletes during the off season they gain at least 5 pounds from their race weight? Because it is in my case and I am still active during the winter but its a different kind of active from the warmer months, I don't run as much. Is this a bad thing?

Not at all, unless you are getting outside of the healthy weight range for your height. I saty active in all disciplines in the off season but gain about 5 lbs every year. Its your bodys way of replenishing many minerals and micro nutrients it has lost over the regular season, due to hard training and racing. These activities can really take a toll on your body, and this has quite a latency period, hang in there it will come off this spring.

Even if you don't get alot of responses, I know plenty of runners/triathletes who encounter this very issue, your very normal.

I know personally I gained as much as 8 lbs during the holiday season even though I continued to run. Even when I ran a 1/2 marathon earlier this month I was 6 lbs heavier. This week my weight has fluctuated a bit but I'm still 3 - 5 lbs heavier than I was at the end of Oct.

I've gained 8-10 lbs. Some of it is all those yummy holiday treats but some of it is my body "protecting" me from the cold weather that I run in. And some of it is the fact that I can't maintain that lower race weight for very long. I think it's pretty normal, though it is kind of annoying.

Putting on a little weight during the off season is fairly normal. You won't be burning quite as many calories due to lower mileage and intensity of workouts and you probably won't be as strict about your eating habits. Heck, last month I put on 5 pounds from a single trip to the local Chinese buffet. Just think of it as a time for your body to rebuild its reserves.
