Happy birthday Fred! Doing any celebrating besides your workout?

I always feel just a bit sad when we get to a new month and leave the old thread behind. Interesting discussion over on another website raised the question, would you rather feel good while you're running, or run fast? Of course, they are not mutually exclusive. Most of the time, when you're going fast, you're feeling pretty good. Or in my case lately, I'm running slowly and feeling like ****. But a fellow on the discussion, who is in our age range, said he would love to be able to re-capture that feeling of flowing along effortlessly, even though he's running 18's for 5K and sub 3:00 in the marathon. So I ask, if you had to choose, would you rather feel strong and fluid while you're running, or would you rather be able to run fast times?

Wed. 70 minute easy trail run. Rocky footing kept the pace slow.
Thurs. 7 miles, including 2 X one mile at around 7:00 pace. Discontinued the workout, due to tight achiness in my hip area. Not sure what it is, but it seems to prevent me from striding out. Going for acupuncture tomorrow.
Fri. 40 min. easy trail run w/ 6 x 20 second strides toward the end. Started very slowly and finished less slowly. Hoping to get out for an easy second run later, but between the heavy rain and my lack of motivation...

Re: 50 Plus February Running and Racing
Happy birthday, Fred.
I would vote on the synthesis of the two approaches; favoring the long-slow at the starting base phase of each season and addition of minimal fast runs close to target races. Personally, I like to run high mileage, and feel **** when building up. After adapting, I feel very good logging high mileage, 85-90 mpw, relatively slow. Last year, I logged 800 miles in ten weeks before running a HM in 1:22:55. First 300 miles were 9 min or slower.
In January, total of runs 100 miles, walks 35 miles. Two fold increase from December.

Happy Birthday, Fred!

A little over 8 miles total. I started this morning in a sleet storm. Footing became treacherous and I abandoned it after 3 miles. The morning epiphany came as I watched a car go by and thought, "That person is an idiot for driving on these roads." My next thought was, "What are you doing out here?"

I got another 5+ miles this afternoon - slip-sliding along, hard to go faster than a jog without falling. Call it a stability / flexibility workout. Physical conditions were absolutely miserable, so I'm claiming bonus points for being out there.

Happy Birthday Fred!

As someone who struggles to run fast, I'd take fast times over cruising effortlessly any day.

Speaking of which, I skied 4 miles yesterday and went down hard a mile into the thing. Then I got up and did it again a few minutes later, really jarring my ribs the second time.

I'm still sore today, but cruised effortlessly through 3 miles on the treadmill.

Dribbling? I guess that happens more when you get old. ;) Happy (belated) Birthday.

On an uncertified course today, I ran what was probably a PR pace in a local 5K. Clock time was 21:20, but Mr. Garmin said it was only 3.06 miles and people I trust (not just Garmin types) also thought the course was short. Even adding 18 sec to my time, though, it would have been a 27-sec PR. So 2008 is off to a good start. The 2nd-place trophy was nice. :) Next year, I'll be in a new AG (10-year spread in this race), so I'll be aiming for 1st.

3.9 M later @ 8:38 m/M, just to get in my 7 for the day.

Re: 50 Plus February Running and Racing

11 miles of easy running. Today was warmer and it was nice to run in shorts and a sweatshirt.

60 is the new 35?? You guys at the crest of the boom are constantly changing the rules so you have the best of things and the rest of us will be forever trying to catch up.

You remind me of my in-laws who are in their 70s. In their age bracket the social competition is about who has the best cemetary plot. There is more status associated with having a vault versus a grave plot, and indoors is better. If you have a vault, it is best to have one 3-6' off the ground so visitors don't have to crouch or look up to see you.

We attended a family funeral recently and Mama and Tia took sometime to visit the matriarch who passed away last year. She is resting in an indoor mausoleum complex. The floor and walls are marble and the glass ceilings provide lots of light. The complex is large and there are numerous galleries connected by wide walkways.

Tia Amada insisted that I come to see her vault which was in the same complex.

"See. Here it is. This is where Pepe and I will be," she said pointing at a blank marble slab in the wall.

"Gee, it seems really nice," I said as I looked around. "This is a warm room and you've got a lot of sunlight overhead. There is a great view out the window at the end of the hall. There is organ music playing continuously and that seems restful. And the office is right across the hall in case you ever need anything." I waved my arms at the guard behind the glass doors. "Dos café (two coffees), por favor," I called to him. He waved back.

Tia smiled, pleased at the praise.

"Hey, maybe I could stay with you when my time comes," I told her.

"Well...." She was doubtful. "I don't know if there is enough room," she said indicating with her hands how the caskets are stacked.

"Oh, I think there is enough room is we all lie on our sides," I told her. "Look, there are lots of vaults with more than 2 people in them.

"OK, you can stay with us, if you like," she said happily.

Re: 50 Plus February Running and Racing

Pt - you tell some good ones. Thanks and keep 'em coming.

10 miles today including a 10K race in Edinburg, TX. They let the elites line up and then just let the crowd line up behind them. Little kids 4-6 y.o. or without chips, walkers, etc. lined up wherever. Took a full mile to get to run. Anyway 75 degrees at start and warming plus 25 mph hours winds did not bode well for my bragging. don't know chip time yet but did equal or best my master's pr. around 40:25.

Re: 50 Plus February Running and Racing

Ksrunr, sounds as if you had a good day if you equaled your best in 25 mph winds with a mass start. 2008 will be a good year for you.

12 miles in the hills in sunny spring-like weather, temperature in the low 40s with light winds. My legs are tired. I realized today that I've been doing hills at least 3 days a week during the month of January.

Re: 50 Plus February Running and Racing

Pt- thanks. Results are posted. I missed the oa sr master win by 7 secs. But with that crazy start I didn't see him or really anyone my age group during the run. So I missed the $100 payday and settled for 1st age group.

I'm really tired and taking a day off. Going to cut my mileage back now to 40-45 for a while and try to get sharp again.

Go Pats!!! I don't really care who wins (and I usually pull for the underdogs) but I'd like to see some one go undefeated.
