Re: New folks
I am pretty new at it. I started running as a hobby about 4 years ago, in combination with kickboxing, but just recently thought I'd take it to the next level. It was a New Years Resolution and a way to get myself feeling healthier. I will be 48 years old and I have never felt stronger physically. What was originally a goal to to try to get every ounce of fat off of me, turned into a desire to be able to run a marathon some day. I love running outside on a trail as compared to a treadmill. I find it mentally and physically satisfying, Unfortunatley, I live in an area where sometimes it gets pretty cold, but this year hasn't been that bad and I've been able to bear it with my will. I only wish I could find and get out on a really scenic trail and run. I'd had to travel a distance to find one. This community is great as I do not know anyone who shares my interest in running like this. I always wondered how anyone ran so many miles without getting exhausted, but now I am starting to see how it can be accomplished each week of my training. The first time I ran a consistent 20 minutes, without any difficulty, I almost cried! I was so excited and coudn't believe I actually did it! But I did!

I always thought running was so strenuous and difficult that I never thought I'd be able to do it for a long distance. Although challenging, it is one of the most satisfying things I have ever done with my body and mind! And physically, my body seems to be taking a new shape on it's own, naturally. It's the best.

Re: New folks

MammaBird,

Not sure why you're asking, but I'm a new runner. Here's my story, if it's interests you.

After a couple of false starts, I started running in earnest about 4 weeks ago. The difference between the other times I've started and this time is that I've chosen a particular program of interval training to follow. I picked up a couple of books on running, and they were all consistent in saying that a walk/run combo program is a great way to get started.

The program I'm following takes 30 minutes a day, plus some core exercises and stretching. I get it done before I head to work, and have already noticed all the benefits - great energy, sleeping better, weight loss, etc. It's sparked a change in a lot of aspects of my life (work, mood, attitude) and I'm already waking up excited to hit the road.

Hope this is what you were looking for, and hope that you get the same kind of enjoyment about it that I have.

Re: New folks
I just started last friday! I'm doing the couch to 5k program with a friend and its going well. I think i'm getting over the initial soreness now. It is sooo cold in kansas though. Yesterday we ran in 19 degrees with wind. I thought i was gonna die but then when we were done i was a lil warmer. This is my rest day and I want to do some more! LOL.

Re: New folks

I'm getting back into it since January. I started last year and dropped out of it once the heat hit...I live in Arizona. It feels great to be back though and plan to keep up with my program even if it involves getting up early when summer hits this time to beat the heat. I dont run far yet. I did my first race a few weeks back, it was just a 2 mile fun run, but I really enjoyed it and am ready to find a 5k and start moving up in the racing world! It is adicting! Good luck to you and keep posting your progress!!!!

Re: New folks

Jay,

Thanks for your reply. As a new runner, I'm always curious what more experienced runners do on their "off" days. For instance, I'm running 4X a week (M, W, F, Sat), and walking on the opposite days. What do you find to be the best activity on your off-days that doesn't require taking the time to go to a gym?

Thanks,

M.

Last weekend I ran in a 4 mile race. I did it in just over 40 minutes. How do I get faster?

Hi Mammabird. I'm a newbie too. I just completed my first week of C25K (couch to 5k). It was tough but I made it through.Welcome.;)

I'm a big fan of swimming, biking, or elliptical training (my personal favorite). I have a bike trainer set up in my basement in front of a small TV for days when I can't leave the house. What's most important is that you find something that you enjoy.
Good luck!

In order to best improve racing times, you should work on building speed and endurance. Speed is improved through intervals (repeats of short distances like going to a track and running 4-6 half miles with a short jog in between each one) and endurance is increased by running longer distances on your training runs. Tempo runs are something of a combination where you run about half of a mid-distance training run at a high intensity (you can run the faster portion all at once or break it up into shorter sections spaced throughout the run). Don't forget that your body also needs recovery time in order to rebuild (this is when you actually get faster).
Good luck!
Jay
