Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Patty,

You said it was a Canondale right? That is one heck of a tease. My road bike is an older Paramount before Schwinn went out of business. It is a decent bike with quality Shimano SC105 components but it is really old school with the shift levers on the down tubes. Hmmmmm. Makes me want to put some air in the tires

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Slmoes - I'm going TO Chicago FROM Los Angeles on Friday.  I'm guessing I'm going to need to run on the treadmill at the hotel instead of outside from your comment about winter?

I didn't sleep well last night so this morning's run was okay from the neck down, but my head felt like it was asleep during the run.  How weird is that?

I had a dream that I showed up to do the Great Race in April and I wasn't registered because I had forgotten to do it.  I guess I had better do that, huh, Michael since I know that you have?  I'm still so nervous about a 10K I guess!

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Mike this is what happens when I don't pay attention to who posted what!  I thought it was you with the new bike. My bike is an old schwinn too. It used to be my daughter's, but she barely used it.

Slmoes sorry the comment was your new bike is a spring tease.

I really need to pay better attention. Sshheess.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Woodwoman - we got another 3 or so inches of snow last night - we haven't had this much snow in the Chicagoland area since 1979.  Current temp 2 degrees.  The other fun thing I heard on the radio this morning - we have only had 8% of the available sunshine for the month.  So we have had the trifecta - snow, cold and gray.  Bring me Spring!!!

Got my 2 miles in last night - have 3 planned for tonight.

Have a great day everyone!

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Slmoes nice job on the run and good luck with tonights 3 miles. How much snow have you gotten so far this winter in Chicagoland? My DH has family out there.

Well I ran my 3 miles this morning. While not speedy except for the last mile, I was happy it wasn't very slow. Tomorrow is 2 miles.

Have a good day.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Irish Patty so far for the year we have had over 45 inches of snow, another inch or 2 tonight.  I guess the snow around here is like an unwelcome house guest - it just won't leave.

Got my 3 miles in last night - 2 coming today.  I am taking the day of work tomorrow - and Saturday looks really busy so I think I am going to do my 4.5 miles tomorrow.  That will make 4 days in a row running - but they Saturday will be day off and Sunday will be walk so hoping it all works out.

Keep up the great work everybody!!  Happy Valentines day - enjoy - but remember how many minutes of running it takes to work off every chocolate you eat.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Hi y'all,

Been a few days since I logged in, but I am still here and still with the program. I am in week 4 now. I did 3 miles today in about 37 minutes. I started way too fast and ended up having to take a few walking breaks. I still ended up at approximately the average pace I wanted, but I'm somewhat annoyed with myself for not pacing myself correctly enough to run the whole way. I know I can run 3 miles without walking, I've already done it a half dozen times on this program. And I really have no desire to be a "run/walk"-er. I am a runner. So my goal for the rest of the program is not to walk. I will run slow as a tortoise if I have to.

I have concluded that I really, really need to get a heart rate monitor to help me with my pacing. I really haven't figured out my steady training pace yet. Some days I'm fast and some days I'm slow; some days I finish feeling like I could have done much more, and some days I'm very fatigued. I'm new to all this so I'm trying to be patient with myself and just keep chugging, but I really think a HR monitor might help.

Happy V-day all

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

NYC - Like you I really see the use of a heat rate monitor and have been thinking pretty seriously about one. I am thinking though of opting for a Garmin Forerunner GPS watch which does heart rate as well as give you a whole lot of information. This whole lot of information comes with a whole lot of money.

I missed yesterdays run, life got in the way but I did get one in 3 miles this morning. There was a slight mist in the air and it really felt great. It was one of them mornings when I really had to drag myself out of bed and out the door but once outside it was all worth it.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Hello all,

NYC each run is different. If you ran fast one day, the next should be easy. You probably will be tired and sluggish feeling anyway. There are a lot of things that affect you and your run, stress, lack of sleep. I wouldn't worry about your speed too much as your increasing distance (per week).  Speed can come later.

I ran my 2 miles today in 24:20 minutes. It felt good, but I know I will have a slow 4.5 miles this weekend. I'll be away in New York and I've got to figure out how to get a good approximation of my mileage. I am very anal. This will bug me.

Have a good day all.

Patty

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Patty,

I use one of the many running mapping services that use google maps on the net to figure out how much I have run. Since you have an active account the active way would be to login to www.activetrainer.com and click on tools and then create route. I use this method a lot to map my runs. Of course I ran before where google maps did not know my streets and I had to drive them with my car. I guess I am kind of anal with that as well.

Today I went out for a 2 mile run. Went really well and I am pretty motivated.

Mike

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Michael - I have the garmin forerunner 305 with the heart rate monitor.  I love it.  I have the footpod but don't use it inside.  I love being able to load my runs to the computer and see my speed and heart rate.  However, I keep looking at the new 50 and how much smaller it is . . . . .

Ended up doing my 35 minute walk on Friday, taking Saturday off and running 4.5 today.  All set to begin week 7 tomorrow.

Got a trainer for my bike on Friday.  Given up any hope of being able to ride outside in the near future.  However, today's snow didn't materialize and they are now saying maybe we might get 1 or so inches tonight.  I can live with that.

Hope everyone has had a great weekend.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Slmoes - My understanding about the garmin 405 is that it does have reduced functionality from the 305 in order for them to make it smaller.

Well, Sunday was supposed to be a 3 mile run for me but life got in the way and I could not make it out. This morning was suppose to be a rest day but I made up my run instead. Starting tomorrow I have my 3 day in a row run which would end up being 4 days because running today so I am thinking of running tomorrow and then taking Wednesday off. Then I will run Thursday,Friday and I will be caught up!!. Next Sunday my WK8 5 mile run and will be the furthest I ever run in my life. I know it is all a mental block and I am sure I will do fine.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Hey all!

Michael, I juggle days around like that all the time. I always get in all the prescribed runs in any given week, but I don't always do them on the exact days HH says to. For example, a lot of times I will take Wednesday off instead of Friday and run Tue-Thu-Fri instead of Tue-Wed-Thu. This is because Wednesday tends to be a really busy day for me.

I took the plunge this weekend and bought a HR monitor. I got the Polar FS2. I ran with it this morning and realized that I have been running way too fast a lot of the time. It was hard not to go above my target zone! I knew I was having pacing issues, which is why I bought the thing. I think for a while I will forget about pace per mile and just concentrate on covering each distance in my training range.

Happy running all...

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

NYC - Good job on getting the POlar unit. They have a long history of being very good units. I am curious myself if I am going to strong and should slow down.

Myself I went out on my WK8D1 2.5 mile run. I am looking forward to running the 5 mile run this Sunday, I feel pretty prepared for it.
