Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Hello all,

NYC those Heart Rate monitors are an excellent way to train smart.  Congrats on the purchase.

Michael you'll be able to get that long run in. You've got the base mileage down.

Well Saturday I decided to do my long run as I was expecting a late night Saturday night. I was in the mountains in NY and don't think I did more than 3 miles. It was cold, I'm told 10 degrees and hilly. A rather difficult run and I'm pretending it was 4.5 miles.   Today I did 2.5 miles in 30:59. The first 2 miles were 24:19, which was fairly fast for me.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Hey Everyone,

Michael - the best way for me to do a new long run is to map out a new route. Maybe if you concentrate on the new scenery you wont realize how much further you have to go. This is the one thing that helps me not get ahead of myself and I can focus on what's around me instead of the distance I'm running. Good luck!

The HR monitor sounds really cool. Is it hard to figure out how to use?

I started week 6 today with a 2 mile run. It was going great until a boy came up from behind me and left me in the dust - I hate when that happens! I have to remember I am not competing with anyone else!

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Hey everybody - back from Chicago.  Nice to see the snow but wowie, forgot what really cold weather is like.  Here's a salute to all of you who bravel the serious elements.  I started to feel bad on the flight - knew something was just wrong, by the time I got there I felt awful.  Made it to an urgent care late on Friday night and found I had a kidney infection.  Anyway, I was glad the only run scheduled for the weekend was Sunday and a 3 mile at that.  Fortunately, I got medication on Friday and Sunday I used the hotel's treadmill.  Today's went okay but I think the combination of a busy trip/illness has me feeling wiped out.

Need some input - I signed up to do a 5K on Saturday - should I stick to the plan for this week?  Cut back Thursday?  I'm not looking to run any fast race, just get one in before the 10K in April.  But I also hate to compromise Sunday's longer 5 mile run - do that next week?  Sorry to have so many questions, just thought you all would have some good ideas.

(How you feeling, Fistomag?)

Take care all.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

I haven't been reporting in much recently, but I'm still running. I started week 3 today, with a 1.5 mile run. Running 1.5 miles isn't that hard anymore, so hopefully the jump to 2 miles next week won't be to bad.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

I am feeling good., my body sucks though. I dropped back due to time off, and the first day back was tough.  The second day got easier and so on. I am running faster naturally. I have started to run at an indoor track and it has helped me out as I can see the speed increase that the treadmill does not let me see. I got a blister the first day back, and no matter how many bandages etc I put on it hurts. I went and bought some anti-blister socks at the local running store and I plan to use them today. I keep agravating the blister, but If I take another week off I will be back at the beging and I do not want that. The good news is the blister did not hurt at the run today.

I thought maybe I was alergic to the indoor track. An hour or two after I run there I would start sneezing and my nose would run and eyes water for the rest of the night and the next day. I have run the track 3 times and it has happned every time. I ran in the gym today on the treadmill and the same thing happened to me. I am now wondering if it is something else.

I am not sure if I told everyone about my tailbone. I have trouble sitting in a reclined position. I can only sit straight up or my tailbone hurts badly. This has been ongoing since a year ago when I had my surgery. I think that my butt was so fat that I had all the coushion my tailbone needed, and after loosing the weight I started to get pain when I sat. I am going to an orthapedic surgeon to discuss options for surgery to fix my tailbone. I can no longer do a situp, because of the pain on the tailbone when I move into the reclined postition. I have had an exray about 3 weeks ago and foudn out that I broke my tailbone sometime in the past and it healed badly, which is what is causing the issues.  I am loking into getting surgery to probably break the bone and reset it. I am very curious how this is done and how much time I will need off to recover. Which will put me back again.

All in all though running has beomce easy. Mostly my issue is getting bored after 30 mins of running. I find changing locations helps and running with a partner helps as well. I am now running a 11 min mile naturally. Which is amazing to me since I started out 4 months ago at 14 min mile. Thats like 1 min off each month. I can run a 10 min mile but I am winded by the time I complete it and have to drop back to 12 min mile to recover.  As long as I maintain a normal pace I can complete my runs and I do not feel  bad afterwards.

I will try to give more ferquent updates, and I hope I get over this nasal issue soon.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Woodwoman - glad you made it safely back home after a visit to our snow covered wonderland.  Sorry you were sick  - kidney infections are the worst.  Fistomag good job on your runs -- even with your breathing issues.  Usually if I am congested I feel better once I start running - guess each of our body's fights illiness a different way.  Irish Patty - looks like you and I are about the same speedwise -- however, mine are still happening on the treadmill - 4 degree weather and I don't get along well.

Week 7 is offically started - did really good on not running Monday!  Got my 2.5 in yesterday, but I can't say that I am looking forward to the 3 tonight - I so want to get back outside and run - but the weather just won't cooperate.

Have a great day everyone.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Woodwoman have you considered just adding 2 miles to the end of Saturday's 5K. I know some people who have done this.

Well I ran my 3 slow miles today and followed them with a weight workout. Tomorrow will be 2.5 miles. I'm inclined to run them outside except we're expecting snow etc soon and I don't know what the roads will be like tomorrow. I guess I can decide tomorrow.

Have a good day all.

Patty

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Woodwoman - I don't think you need to ease up on your Thursday run. As long as you rest on Friday you will be good to go on your 5K on Saturday. Enjoy it and let us know how it went.

Myself I did 3 miles today. I find this program to be a lot easier then I thought. However I am sticking to thew plan and not exceeding it.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Hello all! Today I ran 2.5 miles. They were surprisingly fast. The first 2 were done at just under 12 min./mile pace and the 1/2 mile in 6:11. I was happy. I think sunday's run will be 5 miles.

Have a good run all.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Hi all,

fromhere2there, the HR monitor is very easy to use. I love it. I just checked out the manual and I had it figured out in no time.

I am taking tonight off from running, as my left knee is feeling very uncomfortable. It feels strange, like I twisted it or something - I think maybe I slept on it wrong last night. It's been hurting periodically as I walked around today.  I don't want to make it worse, so I am going to take today off and rest until it's back to normal. I feel a little frustrated about it, because yesterday was a rest day (I had planned to run today and tomorrow, then walk Sat and run Sun as prescribed.) But, I definitely don't want to run on it, make it worse, and then be sidelined with an injury.

I'll post after my next run, whenever that may be -- hopefully tomorrow night if my knee's feeling better.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

I love my heart rate monitors.  I have a polar and a timex.  Usually I find out I am not working nearly as hard as I thought I was - but sometimes I find out I am pushing it way to hard.  Today is day off.  My 2.5, 3 and 2 miles are in the bag for week 7.  I'll do my 3.5 on Saturday, do my triathlon swim clinic Sunday morning and do my walk Sunday afternoon.

Have a great weekend everybody.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Hey slmoes when are you planning your triathlon. Also, what type is it? For the past 2 years I've done one at my gym and this year my sister wants to join me. It's not a real one as they they go according to time. We begin with 15 minutes in the pool, we have 10 minutes to change and go upstairs to the track. There we run for 30 minutes followed by 30 minutes on a stationary bike. Not a real one but it's not easy either. I confess to not having gotten into the pool once this year. I have to get into it soon. Btw your doing great.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Patty - right now I have plans to do at least 3 tris this summer. The first is in April - and it is an indoor outdoor tri - swim and bike inside, 2.5 mile run outside. Then I'm going to the the Danskin Sprint Tri in July and another tri on that same course in August. I am excited. Also it keeps me from running too many miles in a week - which at my old age of 47 can be bad!! Have never done triathlons before but I am getting very excited.

Re: Hal Higdon's Spring Training

Good Morning All -

No running for me today. If I had attempted it this morning it would have been more a swim since when I got up it was raining pretty hard.

NYC - I think it is a good move to give your knee a rest for a day. I have noticed as well for unknown reasons one of my knees will give me a slight pain. Usually by giving it a day off it resolves itself. Pain is your bodies way of saying something is wrong of you need to slow your roll a little.

Patty - Don't you just love when you get in them runs where your speed is good and everything just goes right? Your speed increase is a great sign that you have been doing things right and are reaping the rewards of good training. Keep it up!!

I hope everyone has a great weekend and has some good runs.

Mike
