Winter Running Blahs

Does anyone else suffer from lack of self motivation to get out and run regularly and long lately? I have been in a running maliase since mid-January. I came off a great year, ran my 1st 100 in late Oct, enjoyed the **** out of it, I had been doing great through the holidays and continued to run long and with great pleasure past the New Year, but these past 5-6 wks, just have sucked. I started to feel heavy legged, then I felt a bit better, ran a long run, but stupidly wore shoes that have always been a bit too skimpy for long runs, and started a bad bout of plantar fasciitis. I'm good for up to about 8 miles, but my heel is still in pain. If it were only the fasciitis, I think I'd feel better, but I'm just not too motivated to go out in the cold, icy weather. I've become an expert at the good excuse. Help! I need some external motivation, commiseration, to get me back on track. Whine, whine, whine...sorry.

Bill

Re: Winter Running Blahs

I can relate, Bill. I went through a funk in January. What pulled me out of it? I have an online coach that I pay for once a month. When I thought about the money I was wasting by not doing everyone of the workouts he was suggesting, it got my butt back in gear. Just PR'd in a half marathon this weekend (at 42!), so it was a good solution for me.

Good luck and stretch your soleus, that's what chased away my plantar fasciitis.

Re: Winter Running Blahs

Bill! Yes, I understand. It gets harder and harder to get through the winter for me.

I thought it was just the winter blues until I found out I am anemic, so on top of not being motivated I haven't been feeling well at all. Every mile is a struggle. I have Mohican in June and absolutely need to get my double-long runs back up to multiple hours. I have been racing to get in shape just to be forced to go the distance. Plus the trails have been in terrible shape, this winter has been brutal.

Keep it up, though, you will be glad you did.

In fact today I am going to write out my training plan. What is your goal race?
