April 12, 1980, three years after an above-knee amputation of his right leg for osteosarcoma, 21 year old Terry Fox starts his Marathon of Hope in the Atlantic Ocean at St. John's, Newfoundland, running his way across Canada, winding through small towns and big cities, averaging 23.3 miles per day through 143 days and 3339 miles until stopped by lung metastases, just outside Thunder Bay, Ontario.  His hopes to run to the Pacific Ocean could not be achieved; his hopes to raise money for cancer research across Canada were realized, with more than $24 million dollars by February, 1981.  He died June 28, 1981.  The first Terry Fox Run, now the largest single-day cancer fundraiser in the world, took place at 760 sites in Canada on September 13, 1981, growing to sites in 53 countries by 2002 and estimated to have 2.5 million participants annually.

April 13, 1970 (at least in the US; it was already the 14th UTC), an oxygen tank on the Apollo 13 mission exploded, causing major damage to the spacecraft and putting the crew in a life-threatening situation.  Their successful return from a "failed" mission is a tribute to their skills and efforts and those of many others, famous and unknown alike.  For all the "unlucky" talk about the mission, a serious question is what would have happened had the tank exploded at another time during the mission...........

Today is Spring Hula Hooping Day, a day to continue spring cleaning by throwing away your old hula hoop, but not without trying it out again one more time.

2001: The Indian government hired several large monkeys to scare away thousands of smaller rhesus monkeys that had been attacking New Delhi's civil servants and trashing state property. The fearsome-looking langur monkeys patroled New Delhi's defense, external affairs and finance ministries - as well as the army headquarters and Delhi's main hospital - snarling menacingly at intruders. Each guardmonkey was paid $15 a month, in bananas.

Resonance may prove dangerous:  On April 14, 1831, soldiers marching in step on a bridge in Manchester, England cause it to collapse.  The wind will prove the downfall of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in 1940.

Ray Kroc, a milk shake machine salesman, had gotten the idea from a hamburger place in San Bernardino, California, run by the McDonald brothers. An opening day hamburger was 15 cents. The 49-cent Big Mac was introduced in 1968 and the 53-cent Quarter Pounder in 1971. Last year there were more than 31,000 McDonalds in 119 countries.

Today is Daffy Duck Day. Daffy appeared in his first cartoon, "Porky's Duck Hunt," on April 17, 1937. He didn't get his name until he appeared in the 1938 short, "Daffy Duck and Egghead." In 1999, the U.S. Postal Service issued a new Daffy Duck stamp on his birthday.
