Thurs. 2/28/08

How did those workouts go today?  I hit the elliptical for an hour this afternoon.  I started out fairly slow and then gradually picked up the pace as I went on.  It was essentially a recovery day.  I hope someone else has a more interesting workout...

I ran 7 miles this morning in 68 minutes, 159 ave heart rate, 192 peak, 1089 calories burned. It felt great and pain free which is what I really needed as confirmation that I'm recovering properly from being hit by a car on 2/11.

Buenas Dias from Juarez, MX.  With my right soleus bothering me from Tuesday's run I did some spinning and elliptical last night at the hotel's fitness center here in Juarez.  Tonight I'm planning on doing the same.

Toby, I had read about your mishap earlier this month.  I couldn't believe it.  Good to hear you are on the mend and getting back at it.

    Buenas Terry!

Rest that soleus--elliptical sounds like a good plan.

Thanks for you concern. I'm soooo happy to be healing well

    Enjoy your trip!

Toby!  you got hit by a car???!!!  I don't even know what to say about that!  I'm sorry.

My workout today consisted of running around with kids, doing errands and buying presents for Jimmy.  It's our anniversary.  I also took another sick kid to the DR.  it turns out my 2 year old has strep, the croop, AND the flu.  The worst thing about that is that his steriod medicine for his lungs makes him super hyper.  He's like the tazmanian devil on speed!!!  So no formal workout for me but I'm gearing up for another good long 20 on Saturday.  I'm excited.

I should be on my bike but instead I'm making chocolate covered strawberries and grilled fajitas!  I like my rest days.

Good thing you guys are so tough, you keep me motivated.  Rest well Terry.

Andrea, stretch really good before, during and after your workouts.  I'm not an expert but that the only thing that ever helps me.

    Good Luck.

enjoy your anniversary.  mine was a little crazy....with the sick kid, missing dog and all...still good though.

    Back at it tomorrow.

Hey Jen, yeah I got hit on 2/11 and I haven't been too vocal about it because of all the legal proceedings but things are beginning to get sorted out and with that, I've resumed physical activity. I'll be out there tomorrow for a 20-30 mile mountain run in Cuyamaca SP and then a 60-mile bike ride on Sunday in the Anza-Borrego SP. Sounds like you've got your hands full at home. Enjoy those 20 miles tomorrow. ~T

You're the second runner I post with in 6 months to be hit.  Glad you're ok.

I've learned, when they come to a stop sign, the driver usually looks left, but often not right.  If you're a runner, approaching from the right watch out.

3 miles, strength again, lotsa core.

I notice, Terry, those bridges you guys do.  They're held statically.  On the side bridge (or plank), I drop my hip to the floor and raise it.  Any thoughts?  Ever try it?

Toby, when do you train?  I train in the early a.m. but I also live in a relatively rural area so not much traffic.  How do you have the time to do that much training?  I'm a little jealous.  Any mountain run for me right now would have to involve snowshoes and biking (except for very close to home) is really limited.  Let me take that back, I'm A LOT jealous.

Enjoy every second of it and keep healing!

    Re: Thurs. 2/28/08

    Hey Jen,

An ideal week will look like this but is always subject to change based on events, clinics, group training opportunities and life (you're an expert in this area I'm sure of it)

    Mon Swim (lunch hour)

    Tues Run-commute (2.5hrs and 14 miles total)

Wed Cycle-commute (1.25hrs and 14 miles total) Swim (lunch hour)

    Thurs Run-commute (2.5hrs and 14 miles total)

Fri Cycle-commute (1.25hrs and 14 miles total) and Swim (lunch hour)

Sat Long run (early, 20+ miles, 4+ hours)

Sun Active recovery (swim, hike, yoga)

This is (should be) my weekly base and I'm going to need to build on to this in order to attempt the 100-mile run on 6/7-6/8. I'm beyond excited and thankful for the support of my girlfriend, Marie, who is also a fitness fanatic so she totally understands my commitment to this lifestyle. This year is off to a solid start and the bike accident has only strengthened my drive--98 days until the race!!!

    Re: Thurs. 2/28/08

It's great to have supportive people around you.  My husband and I have this unwritten rule that I get the mornings and he gets the evenings for golf or hunting or whatever.  We've learned to compromise and if I have to shift long runs to school days he will even get the kids on the bus for me.  It works out well.  Especially since I basically have at least one of the four kids glued to me the rest of the day...

Having said that though, if I had more time to myself during the day I would definately take it.  I'm excited for the time when my kids are all old enough to hike and not be carried or bike with me while I run.  In the summer we go to the lake to swim but I have to take turns with my friends so the kids are safe.  They are still too little to go the distances and I don't even have one old enough to legally baby-sit yet, so my time is very limited.  I am really enjoying what I do get in though and it makes the piles of laundry and dishes a little less tedious since I still have an identity that is separate from wife and mother.  (though, that is important to me too.)

98 days huh.  You'll do great.  I love having a race or a goal to look forward too.

What's your favorite re-fueling meal?  I'm kind of obsessed with food lately and need some new ideas.
