Have you customize your shoe fit yet?

When I first started running, I had an issue with heel slippage resulting in some nasty blisters. When I worked in the footwear department at REI, we picked up some cool tricks to fix these kind of issues. I'm a die-hard advocate of the Runner's Knot Runner’s World has published a series of instructional videos to teach you how to Customize Your Shoes With These Tricks.
Which foot and shoe problems have you been experiencing?
PROBLEM: "MY BIG TOENAIL TURNED BLACK."*
PROBLEM: "MY SHOE RUBS ONE SPOT ON THE TOP OF MY FOOT."*
PROBLEM: "MY SHOE IS TOO TIGHT ALONG THE TOP OF MY FOOT."*
PROBLEM: "MY TOES FEEL CRAMPED."*
PROBLEM: "MY HEEL SLIDES UP AND DOWN."*
Have you had any luck with these fixes?

About two weeks ago I started running again. Tonight while walking I noticed a slight rubbing on the outside of my left ankle. After I removed my shoe I noticed the lining has a worn spot in it. The same is happening on my newer pair of shoes also. This has never happened before. What could cause this.

Vicki,
I'm not sure whats actually causing it, but I know how to prevent it and how to fix the worn spot. To fix the worn spot, you'll need to buy some mole skin and stick it in your shoe, over the worn material. This should keep the material from giving you a blister now that its worn. (see my note below for an alternative fix)
To keep the heal from sliding up and down excessively in this area which it kind of sounds like is happening and caused the wearing in the first place (although I could be wrong) you should try the runner's knot. This will secure your heal by pulling more of the shoe's material together without making any other area of the shoe too tight. I hope this helps-let us know.
*Note, I personally wouldn't use mole skin. I would use duct tape but thats just me. I'm one of those guys that fixes everything with duct tape. The reason in your case is the outside of duct tape is smooth and would be a good friction barrier inside your shoe to make sure your heal slides up and down against it.

Toby,
Thanks for the help. My husband also fixes everything with duct tape and made the same suggestion
So if two people say it, it will must be worth a try.
Oh and by the way I have had my custom shoe fit especially now that I have plantar facisitis.
Thanks Vicki
To let you know I tried the runners knot it seem to work. I guess I didn't realize that my heel was slipping. Thanks for the help.

Toby the Duct tape worked and I go get my customized fit tomorrow.
I have high arches and I'm a serious pronator, but I had a hard time convincing the shoe guys that it's possible to be both. I finally went to a place where they videotape you running on a treadmill and WOW - no surprise that my ankles were hurting, it looked like my foot was about to break off. They fitted me with some seriously unattractive shoes: http://shop.fila.com/us/eng/women/running/shoes/detail/SP00584W (I call them my retirement home shoes - I'm still looking for a matching velour jumpsuit.)
Those shoes have become my best friends - at least now that I've "customized" them by cutting off a small part of the shoe that was banging into the underside of my right ankle bone!
Go Kayaking who care what they look like at least your feet are stable. Try looking up www.roadrunner sports.com You might be able to talk to some one over the phone that can help you. They have atore in San Deigo I am not sure where else.
I did my fit yesterday Because of my buil and jigh arches I have been wearing a insole from super feet. THe fitter told me that I had made my own custom shoes by turning the netural chusing into stability shoee. When he had me try on several different pairs I chose a stability the is the sister to the Asics Kensi. Kensi 2 wichc I loved the fit.
I just bought the most comfortable pair of running shoes that I have ever owned (Men's Puma Complete Eutopia). There is only one problem, there is a very rough area where the tongue is sewn to the shoe. It protrudes down just enough to rub the heck out of the tops of my toes. I tried to get to it with a scalpel but I'm afraid to cut too much in fear that the tongue will fall off. Any suggestions? Should I send these back to Roadrunners and have them replace them?
thanks
John
