Injury Prevention

I have had more injuries then anyone I have ever met and I’ll be honest, I think most of them stem from that fact that I’m incredibly stubborn.  I’ll give you an example of one of my more serious injuries. I had been having some back pain on and off and never thought anything or probably didn’t want to think anything of it, so continued to push myself in work outs and lifts. The more I pushed it the worse it got. A couple weeks later I ended up unable to walk and in the hospital with two herniated discs. I’m not even going to go into what it took to recover from that and I’m still plagued by the injury to this day, but I often wonder if it could have all been avoided had I paid attention to the warning signs my body was giving me.

I got to thinking about this because of the article, Playing the Pain Game: Dealing With Injury .  The article goes through four injuries and gives the symptoms and remedies for them.

Here are the injuries and some symptoms:

1.     Shin Splints – shins hurt during and/or after exercise

2.     Hip Pain – aching in the hip or groin

3.     ITB (iliotibial band) – sharp or stabbing pain and often in the outer knee

4.     Achilles Tendonitis – pain or swollen bump on the tendon

I’d like to get some discussion going about injuries and their symptoms. The information should be pretty helpful. What injuries have you had? What were the symptoms? Any other advice?

Let's help each other stay injury free!

Discussing prevention of running injuries is something I have a keen interest in. Take a look at this article that I wrote.  A large amount of products and services are proffered on the concept that the product or service will prevent a running injury. This article critically reviews the available evidence on this topic and identifies a simple strategy to help prevent injury.
