Favorite Tennis Courts?

I'm always interested in finding tucked away, little-known gems in the urban rough: restaurants, clothing stores, old camera repair shops. I was out for a bike ride last night (I live in San Diego, so no snow worries here) when I came across this little tennis oasis. Two nice courts in Mission Hills across the street from a tree-lined park with a decent view of mission bay. Talk about idyllic.

Here's my path: Take Washington all the way to Mission Hills and you'll come to a Y right before you head down the hill. Stay in the right lane and veer to the right. This is now Washington Place. A couple blocks later you'll end up at a school and a park on your left and the courts on the right side.

No lights and no hitting wall. So if you go, take a partner.

Where are your favorite tennis courts?

How busy are those courts? I live in SD too and am looking for places to play that are free!

What is a Favorite Tennis Courts?

To me, a favorite tennis court is one where you can go and pick up a game even if you are a stranger in town.

Bitsy Grant Tennis Center, Atlanta, Ga.

McFarlan Tennis Center, San Antonio, Texas

both have front porches crowded with tennis players looking for a match.

The courts at CSU Fresno. You get a great view of all the matches without moving around much, each of the six courts has a scoreboard, and the top 3 courts even offer covered seating. The tennis has been exciting this year and parking is the only cost. It makes for a very enjoyable time on a weekend. Go Dogs!

Re: Favorite Tennis Courts?

Great tennis going on in Austin. Especially at the Pharr Tennis Center on Airport east of I-35. Great pro shop, 8 clean, lighted courts, great atmosphere. Here are the details:

8 Lighted Laykold Courts (resurfaced 2/1/2004)
2 Person Backboard
Public Managed (Austin Parks and Rec.)
4201 Brookview, Austin, TX 78722
North on I-35, East on Airport (0.5 miles), Right (South) on Wilshire (0.1 miles), Left on Brookview (courts on left)
Water, Food, Restrooms, Lockerrooms, Tennis Equipment
Instructional programs, lessons, and a good league going on as well, plus there's usually a pick-up game to be had nights and weekends.

Napa Valley College has brand new blue/green courts with lights. The design of the tennis courts is professionally done to allow ample room between the courts, a gate for every court, and even beautiful sunsets over the hills to the west in the evenings. These are the best courts in the north bay area.
