Running Magazines

The title says it all. As far as I know there are two majoe running magazines out there. Runner's World and Running Times. Sound off everyone. Which is your favorite and why? I know Runner's World has been bashed for having models on their front covers instead of runners but what are the differences in content?

Re: Running Magazines

Runner's World is a bit more of a general fitness magazine--they are more geared towards beginning runners and people who run to lose weight, keep in shape, etc.

Running Times is a bit more geared towards "competitive" runners, not elite runners but runners who run for the purpose of racing faster.

While I believe those differences are true and real I think sometimes they are over-exaggerated when people talk about the magazines. Both magazines, for instance, tend to have one feature a month on an elite runner.

Marathon and Beyond is very good as well.

Re: Running Magazines

They are both made by the same company, so who cares really.

Re: Running Magazines
I subscribe to TrailRunner and UltraRunning, and RT comes as part of membership in American Trail Running Association. RW topics generally haven't appealed to me - not enough meat. RT has a trail column and occasionally some interesting articles. I probably wouldn't subscribe to it on its own, but there's enough of value that I haven't told them not to send it. My interests are obviously more into dirt and longer distances, which isn't the focus of the mainstream mags. (Some of my training ideas comes from monthly newsletters like Peak Performance, Running Research News, and Sports Injury Bulletin.)

Re: Running Magazines

either are great for new runners and are good for a year or so. Then you realize there is nothing new in them and you stop getting them.

This is the same in any niche. Golf magazines are identical - same articles over and over.

Re: Running Magazines
Yup - add biking mags to the list .... they all talk about the latest and greatest gear that's coming out, and all it does is get you interested in a new golf club that will supposedly make you hit the ball straighter, farther ... cleverly designed to lighten your wallet ...
