First Boston

I'm running my first marathon this year on the 21st. I am associated with a charity so I was able to waive the qualifying time. I live in Boston and my fear was that if I didn't run my first marathon here, I'd never do another again. But after training I must say- I'm hooked. I'm sure this won't be my last. I'm actually sorry to see it end.

I believe I'm well prepared. I've slowly increased my mileage completing about 6 runs at 14-18 miles and one at 21 miles. The 21 miler was on the Boston course and I felt tremendous when I finished. It was, by far, my best "long run" during training. I sprinted up heartbreak and felt as though I could have finished right then! I did that run at a 9:40 pace. I've been training at a 10m/mile-10:30 m/mile pace. Most of my long runs have been on the course, particularly the hills around newton/brighton so I'm well-trained there... and know what to expect.

I've read a lot about pacing, especially the first few miles. I would love some suggestions! I've done quite a few half marathons and consistantly run a 1:45 time. According to running calculators, this puts me at about a 3:40 marathon, but based on my training times- I feel as though this likely isn't realistic? Regardless, I'd like to finish around 3:50- I think this is a realistic goal for my first marathon. My initial instict was to start at 8:45 and try to maintain throughout, but now, after reading more I'm starting to wonder. I should also mention that I'm a 25 year old female.

How should I start the race to best meet my goal time?

Thanks!

Re: First Boston

Your training sounds good and your attitude matches. Run easy this week and carb load properly the last few days and that'll help a lot. The first couple miles will be very crowded so enjoy the warm-up and soon you'll settle into a comfortable pace. I'd suggest sticking to 8:45 or a little slower the first 1/2 to 2/3 of the race and if you still feel full of energy later, then try and pick it up and maintain to the end.

I was fortunate enough to get to do Boston last year, it was my second marathon. I would love to qualify and be there again, hopefully next spring.

Good luck next Monday!
