Running Stomach Issues

Hi,

so while ive been training for the toronto marathon in october, when i am doing longer runs, i tend to get stomach issues where i sometimes i have to stop and find a bathroom.
i feel like maybe it has to do with my diet. and the fact that maybe it could because of GUgel Chocolate.
are there any things anyone would reccomend or foods to stay away from?

i relaly dont want to have to take those types of toilet breaks when running the actual marathon

thanks=)

Re: Running Stomach Issues

Hi, I suggest that you try a few things in your coming long runs. Basically you have to experiment and see what it might be.

  • Try getting up at least 3 hours before your long run and giving your morning 'plumbing' routine to work its magic. Mine involves 3 cups of coffee.

  • Try switching the brand for your fuel; if it has caffine in it, try without. Do the problems seems timed to fit the fueling?

  • Try eating only carbos the night before your long runs.

Good luck!

Re: Running Stomach Issues

kiversen

I have been running marathons for just under three years now and I have been having the same issue. I have never had to go to the potty in a marathon (knock on wood) but I have had the same issue during training. I find that it comes and goes usually I find that I eventually get regulated and will go just when I awake usually just around 5:00 Am and so it does not affect my run. However, recently I will go out before but the moment I start running I begin to pass gas and then I need to stop. During my long runs of 20+, I sometimes have to go twice. When I run twice a day I find that I just keep wanting to go. Luckily, I can most times keep it for runs shorter than 11 miles. I think it has to do with your metabolism speeding up.

I keep thinking it was from drinking beers, then I though it was from using milk a few times when I did not have soy milk, then I though it was my cereal (I tried honey nut cereal recently). I am just not sure. I will let you know if I find what works for me.

For years, I would make a yogurt and fruit smoothie as part of my breakfast every morning and recently I just stop. No good reason just stop. I am thinking that might have a little to do with the fact that I am not as regulated as I use to be.

P.S. Do follow what Achilles told you I must second what he said I just wanted to rant a little because I was having the same problem.
