Training setback: strained calf

Hi folks,

Sigh I think I strained my calf on Tuesday (ho hum). I had finished a routine 4 miler and was in the cool down jog when BAM I felt a charlie horse type pain in my calf. I figured it was just a cramp, so I tried walking it off. No such luck. I ended up having to limp the 0.2 miles home. Since then, the only activity I've done is my yoga class on Saturday, which felt fine. What do you think? Should I see a doctor before returning to my training? Should I risk testing it out tomorrow? My main concern was the 5K run that I built into the training to test my progress. This is coming up soon, so I don't want to blow it.

Any advice would be great!

Thank you!!

Re: Training setback: strained calf

The main thing you need to consider is that a week now of rest won't affect your fitness level as much as about a month or two off running if your calf doesnt get better or gets worse. I used to go through a few months of amazing training then get attacked by the dreaded shin splints, and i'd run through them instead of taking a few days off then they would get worse and i would be off for a few months. this went on for about 2 years for me and the worst they got was for me hgaving to take 6 months off running. that hurts. Now I listen to my body a lot better and stretch well- taking a few extra rest days if Im not recovering very well. If you think your ready for running try a small run and test it out. Your main concern right now should be getting back into the running groove, not your 5km test run. It sounds as if you have increased your running mileage- wich could be the cause of the discomfort, but there could be other reasons that your calf cramped up ie. dehydration or lack of potassium.

Anyways- good luck!

Hey. How is your calf doing? I saw your post and I wanted to check in. I had a similar thing happen to me in a game in high school and I kept playing and tore part of my calf. Ouch! So when I saw your post I was very interested. Anyway, I wanted to see how things were going with you. Hopefully it was just due to dehydration and you are back out there training for your 5k. Hope all is well!

Re: Training setback: strained calf
Good! I'm glad you were able to do the 5k, even if you weren't able to compete like you would have without the injury. Congrats! I'm glad to hear you can give your calf some rest now. I'm sure it needs it especially after those hills. Yikes!! Which race did you do? Well good luck with the rest. As hard as I'm sure it is, you will benefit in the long run (no pun intended) from it. The trainer used to do deep massage to my calf and I could actually do it to myself, but it was extremely painful. I don't know if that would be worth trying or not. Definitely lots of stretching, but gently. It might tighten up with the rest so make sure to keep the stretching up so when you get back out it's not to stiff. Good luck and please do keep me posted on how things are going.

Also, I found this thread after I just posted. It talks about calf pain and different ways of running to help.
