I agree that you need more potassium but if you are eating plenty of fresh fruits (bananas) and vegetables, you are probably getting enough. Muscles need two things to function properly. They need calcium to contract and they need magnesium to relax. Most likely, you have a magnesium deficiency. Magnesium is a major factor in relaxing the smooth muscles within the
blood vessels, thereby reducing peripheral vascular resistance and
blood pressure. It also
stimulates nitric oxide, a mechanism at work when we exercise, helping
to relax and dilate blood vessels. In addition, magnesium reduces nerve
and muscle excitability, stabilizes cardiac conductivity, and
influences neurochemical transmission.
There are a few food sources for magnesium, like pumpkin seed, soy
beans, oat bran or spinach, however it can be rather tiring and
frustrating having to continuously work out which minerals and how much
each food item contains.
A wise and easier choice would be to supplement the diet with a
balanced mineral, trace mineral and vitamin solution, because although
there is an abundance of good quality calcium, vitamin d, and
magnesium supplements
on the market, caution must be exercised when deciding how much to take
of each one in conjunction to the effect on the others. And remember,
they have to be easily absorbed into the intestines to bring maximum
benefits.
I take a
high quality multivitaminand a calcium/magnesium supplement that gives me 700 mg of magnesium. My cramps are gone. I sleep better too. I hope this helps you sleep better without any more cramps.
