50 Plus May Training and Racing

Wednesday

AM 30 minute warmup, 8 times 200 meters with a 15 sec. jog recovery, 10 minute rest,

10 times 60 meters with a 10 second float, nearly 3 hours of basketball.

Back spasms from that one.

Thursday

Sorry, posted in April, but there was nothing new there anyway. Fred, you are right on top of it today. Spareribs

Re: 50 Plus May Training and Racing
What a workout Fred, wow!

Jim, I'm running the Covered Bridges Half Marathon in Vermont on June 1st. I'm running tempo runs 2 or 3 times a week, depending on how I'm feeling. I'm doing the nordic walks twice a week as well, as a way to recover. Everything's going well, the walking sticks seem to help with upper body strength, something I need to continue working on.

A little advice on long runs would be helpful, I don't know if I should slow the pace, run some of the middle miles at half marathon pace, or keep the intensity up slightly for the entire run. I'm only doing 16 milers and will run just 2 more before race day. Any advice would be appreciated.

My weekly mileage is right around 50 BTW, with no intervals or hill work.

Thursday,

4 miles of cross training / recovery...

Re: 50 Plus May Training and Racing

Rich,

I don't know why but I somehow had it in my mind that Covered Bridges was later in the year. This will give you a good benchmark as to where you stand in relation to past couple years. That's a very nice race if I recall.

On the long runs I'd just keep doing what you have been if it seems to be working and you feel good. You say you are "only" doing 16 milers and will do "just" 2 more before your race? I hope that's enough since that's as far as I've been going--only three 16's this year. The rest have been in 12-14 range with mostly 12's. Tomorrow I'll be running my first HM since last fall.

Re: 50 Plus May Training and Racing

Jim, good luck tomorrow!

8 miles for me today. That's the longest run since last November. The docs all said it would take 6 months to heal and they were exactly right.

That's good news Euph. We'll be seeing more of you here.

3.2 in 29 today, spectacular day here. Just 3.3 tomorrow gives me 25, then I move up to 30, and I am very ready for it. Spareribs

Re: 50 Plus May Training and Racing

Thanks, Ribs. One of my miles was a 9:11 which means today may have been the one time this century I could have run a mile with you. It's good to read about your recovery. I have lots of time to think while running my pace for 8 miles. I think the 10% increase/week guideline may be too ambitious as we become richer in years. 10% every 2 or 3 weeks may be wiser for many recovering from long term injuries.

Rich, does that excess speed have anything to do with a razor?

Re: 50 Plus May Training and Racing
Rich,

I got good result, with fast finishing, not in my max length long runs in which I plod relatively slow but of medium long runs. The idea was for me, not to leave my race performance in the training field. Fast finishing pace was much slower than race pace, and I only did 2 runs in the last 2 1/2 weeks.

220 miles in April. Good training to all.

Re: 50 Plus May Training and Racing
Thanks Oguz.

Jim, there's a good reason for your confusion, I actually run 2 covered bridges half marathons. The one in Vermont I've already mentioned and there's one in NH that's run later in the year, this year on August 28th. You were probably thinking of the second one. Good luck in your half marathon tomorrow!

Euphoric, aren't you the curious one lately. Pretty nifty 8 miler you had there too, congrats.

Friday,

6 miles total, decent hill in mile 3. 50:41 / 8:26 pace

Re: 50 Plus May Training and Racing
Saturday,

I was supposed to run long tomorrow , but with a weather forecast that includes an inch of rain, I decided to get that run in today. Weather's drizzle and 42 degrees, but I got my shorts and unshaven legs out the door and headed down the highway.

I'm thinking an 8:20 pace in the half marathon in June is a realistic goal, so set out to warm up for 3, run 8:20's for the next 10, then cool for 3 to give me 16 total. First 3 were 8:30's, the next 10 were in 1:23:26 (8:20.6 pace) and the last 3 were 9:40's. Perfect.

A solid run for this old buzzard, I'm happy.

Rich, happy to read you overcame weather conditions and did that nice run as planned.

Jim, hope the race went well.

Re: 50 Plus May Training and Racing
Yesterday's race was solid, but not quite what I would hope for from a goal race. I thought maybe that 6:30's would feel relatively easy after the string of shorter races at a quicker pace, but it didn't turn out that way. I ended up running a slightly negative split to finish in 1:27:27, but it was almost a minute slower than what I ran this distance last October. Splits were 6:35, 6:40, 6:42, 6:44, 6:40, 6:45, 6:38, 6:34, 6:39, 6:44, 6:39, 6:44, 6:43 and :40 for the last .11. At the half way turn around I counted approximately 28 runners ahead of me and whittled it down to 14 by the finish. This was out of more than 1500 finishers, so in that regard I had a good race. Otherwise it wasn't quite as good as some others I've had in past couple months. It's been fun while it lasted, but with 9 races in last 10 weekends I think I've about played out the string.
