C25K 3rd Day - question for other overweight people

I am 5'3" and 152 lbs. Not terribly overweight, but my body fat percentage is 40% which is very bad. I have gotten through the first week really well, but my knees are beginning to tell me how they feel. Any suggestions? BTW, I "briskly walk" at 3 mph, and jog at 4 mph, so I'm not going very fast at all, but I am scared I will fall off the treadmill or trip sometimes because my balance on those things can get horrible when I start to jog and get tired.

Thanks-

Jenn

Jenn are you where you can run out side? If so try that . Crongrats on starting the program. Knees are very tricky try doing squats (no weights) just your body weight , starting at maybe 3 sets of 5 to 10 reps. this should help build your knees some. Runner's world .com should have more tips to strengthen your knees.

If you are wobbly on ht etread mill slow you pace down until you are comfortable and stay at that speed until you feel confident you can increase hte speed and do it in small increments building your self up.

Try stretching a little more that may help as well. Something else is to get a good shoe fitting. Go to a specialty running store and they will fit you for a shoe that will give you the support you need. Fleet Feet is a good one and there maybe smaller local running store in your area to try.

Good luck Vicki

Oh yeah that schedule cann be tailored to meet your needs if you can only run 1. 5 min do that then walk a little longer. Stay with that until it starts getting easy then increase it.

I suspect your knees are telling you that you need to go to a running store to be fitted for different shoes. You don't have to be overweight to have your knees tell you this either. Anyone any size can experience pain from running in the wrong shoes for their gait. Or running in worn out shoes. That's my guess.

Re: C25K 3rd Day - question for other overweight people

I walk/jog at the exact same speeds as you! Well, at least on the treadmill. I have no idea outside.

Anyway, I agree.....get fitted for some proper shoes. I tried this program about a year ago, and had horrible issues with my shins. This time, I invested the money in the right shoes, and I'm on Week 2 now with no problems whatsoever. But always listen to your body......I think it's normal to be a little sore, but it shouldn't hurt to run.

I'm 5'5 and 184lbs.

I had to do the same thing, my knees and shin splints have been killing me lately so i went to the local dicks sporting goods and they had a machine there that tells you how you distribute your weight on your feet when you load them by walking on the machine. This was really helpful in finding a pair of shoes for my foot type and use. So I got some new shoes but have yet to run in them.

Re: C25K 3rd Day - question for other overweight people
I was pretty much exactly the same size when I started! My speeds were even the same. I agree with the other posters about good shoes and stretching. I do yoga and that is helped so much. I'm starting Week 6 tomorrow. My speed isn't up much yet though (walk @ 3.4-3.6 & jog @ 4.0-4.2). I do Weight Watchers along with exercise for the weight. (5'3" 135lbs.) Enjoy the C25K.

Re: C25K 3rd Day - question for other overweight people
The new shoes helped me alot, I bought some Nike "Structure" shoes and some insoles that the guy at footlocker recommended and today I jogged / ran about 2/3s of a 5k, I did stop to walk a couple of times with my running partner but for short stints. The best thing about it was that I didn't get the aches in my hip and my knees like I have been getting in the past few weeks. I probably could've gone another trip around my route but I was working out with other people and didn't want to hold them up. I highly suggest talking to a knowledgeable shoe sales person about how you run and the pains you are having and see if they have one of those analyzing machines to match you up with a great pair of shoes. I felt better today than I ever have after finishing a jog / run. :)
