Running with Gout?

I was recently diagnosed with Gout! It's mainly on the outside of my right foot. Unfortunatly I go to the Veterans Adminitstration and they seem to know next to nothing about running. I'm 42 and in the past I have been a pretty avid runner (between 25 to 35 miles per week). I ran the OKC half marathon last April (2007). Since that time I have really slacked off to the point now where I am not even consistantly running. I might run 5 miles per week on a good week. I didn't do this as a result of the pain. About 2 weeks ago, I decided to try to get back up to 10 to 12 miles per week. This lasted about 3 runs when the Gout announced itself.

My question is this: Can I run with Gout? I have taken the medication and I can barely feel the pain now, but I'm afraid to hurt myself...Gout is VERY PAINFUL!

Re: Running with Gout?
I'm not sure if the same thing applies to all gout sufferers, but I know someone who suffers from gout who stopped eating red meat all together and since he did that he hasn't had a gout attack (quite a few months now). Other than that, I'm not sure how to help you... I would think that any time inflamation is occurring it wouldn't be a good time to run though.
