Training Dilemmas

First off, let me introduce myself, my name is Dan from Chicago and I'm new to the site. I'm will be doing my second triathlon in August (Chicago Tri), first was an off-road tri. This actually leads me to my dilemma, I am primarily a mountain bike racer, so needless to say, I will be using my XC bike while everyone is using their skinnies...other than adding slicks, any ideas on what I can do to the bike? Also, what is a good training plan for a 1 mile swim?

Thanks in advance

Re: Training Dilemmas

dnavarro82,

Welcome to the site! Unless you plan on changing out your brakes, I wouldn't bother changing the tires. There seeems to be incompatibiltity issues when leaving your existing brakes on a mtn bike and changing the wheels and tires(not in all cases, but most). Theres not a whole lot you can do to a mtn bike to convert it to road style. Your best bet may be to invest in an entry level TT bike, they go for around $1200. I have a couple training plans that I have used and written myself(sprint and 1/2 IM) that were very successfull, let me know if you would like me to send them to you. But basically, start out with a conservative distance and gradually increase to 3000-3500m total for your endurance swim. Remember to build, build, build, recover(in terms of weeks), and add speed/interval work into your weekly routine, this will later be turned into race endurance. Start out with short anaerobic sets(8x25 sprints) and gradually increase the distances, slow the pace, and shorten the rest intervals till you reach the peak phase, which by this time you should be performing a majority of your work outs at or near race pace. I also have a lot of experience with form/technique drills, so I can help there too if needed, good luck!

Re: Training Dilemmas

sorry no suggestions for the bike besides the slicks and tightening the suspension. any chance you can borrow a road bike that is your size even that would be lighter and put you in a more aero position.

for what it's worth some generic training plans are available at trinewbies.com, trifuel.com, and beginnertriathlete.com but they are pretty generic

Re: Training Dilemmas

Hello I was wondering if I could get a copy of those training plans as well????? I am a newbe (in Chicago area) and trying to get any info that i can that is helpful. I have joined a masters swim program and found a group to ride with twice a week and run on my own. Had a little flair up on my IT band that was not too fun but other than that training is going ok.

thanks

Re: Training Dilemmas

I am in training mode for a half ironman and would very much appreciate the training program you set up. I downloaded one from a random site, but I would love to compare it to anything you have created.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!
