In a recent event review in the Active.com directory, one participant noted,
"Agree with all of the posts that recommend better traffic control after the race at the sports complex. It took us an hour to get out of the parking lot."
As an Event Director, how do you control traffic? Volunteers? contract? city? Please share your unique perspective
Depending on the distance of your event....I am speaking from a Marathon and a Half Marathon process.
Traffic control include all of the above, Police,DOT,Volunteers and Private security.
In your task force meetings with your city, county, department of transportation(DOT). Find out what is required to close down major streets and off ramps. This can be pre-planned with your street barricade plan. Some cities will provide this for you and others require you to get a private company to draft the plan then submit to city, county and Local police for approval.
On race day have a central command post with all 1st responders and a key member of your event staff ,in constant communication with your people on the course...Volunteers, Ham radio operators, bike marshals and other key members on the course. Include a parking plan, locations, enter and exit routes in your final race instruction to your runners, This will help with smooth traffic flow after the event.
To save money try to fill minor areas Driveways, none critical traveled roads with volunteers or private security.
Closing down the Las Vegas Strip require conditions that no other city in the World Requires.
I hope this helps!
