May 14, 2008 6:01 PMFirst time I've done speedwork
So the Team in Training group I'll be training with does speedwork so tonight was the first weekly speedwork session. Wowee. It wasn't as bad as I thought. I actually started getting nervous thinking I was going to be slowest person out there, but I soon found out I wasn't alone! We did 4x400s and then we were suppose to do 4x800s. Ya I never got to the 800s. But I did 6 or 7 400s. The first two rounds were fast for me 2:00 and 2:10 from then on out I petered out and ran consistently 2:30. I was still happy with that. But I was excited with how I did and just had to share with you all. It also happened to be my first training run with a group. Not bad - it helps pass the time.
My group does a track speed workout on Tuesday mornings. It is my favorite workout. I think it is because it is the easiest one to measure your speed and success. I like group runs, especially the long runs. I don't know how some of you all can go out and do 22+ on your own. I'd throw in the towel much sooner. teknofauz wrote:

The recommendation is no more than 1 - 2 seconds of variance between the different split times. Trying to run each one as fast as you can could burn you out for your next scheduled run. And having a split time for your last few that is 10 - 15 seconds slower than the first couple is also counterproductive to your training because it will not allow your body to adapt properly to being able to run faster. If I may ask, how did you determine the pace for your 400 and 800 splits? Did the coach customize the workouts for everyone or did he/she just say "Go for it"? I'm thinking it might be a little more realistic to set those splits up based on a specific time from a race you have recently completed. That way, it's more tailored to your current ability. For example, my splits for all the diffferent intervals (400, 800, etc) are based on my last 5K time. They are challenging for me, but they are no doubt much slower than Jimmy or Charlie, who would be on their second beer by the time I cross the finish line in a 5K race. Good luck with the rest of your training. Talk to you soon. Karl
Re: First time I've done speedwork
Hey Karl - That's a good point that both you and Len make. In my coach's defense he did tell us to maintain the same pace with the first and last interval. I was plesantly surprised that the last 4 were pretty much exactly the same mostly because I'm not very good with keeping the same pace. With it being my first time during those types of runs I definitely started out too fast and couldn't maintain it. Should I be running about the same pace as I did with a recent 5k race? I was actually running faster about 1:20/mile faster. So my last 5k I ran 11:20 miles and ideally what time should I run the 400s in?
Mcmillian Runningis a great place to find your different training paces for different types of training runs. Just plug in your best 5K time and it will tell you what your different paces should be.
The McMillan link is very good. They line up pretty closely with the splits that I figured out using the Furman FIRST program. Click on the link Charlie gave you and try using those for a couple of speed workouts. If you can get through the entire routine in addition to the other training runs for that week without much difficulty for two weeks in a row, then you can probably get a little more aggressive and shave off 4-5 seconds per interval and see how that feels. That will probably give you a pretty challenging level of intensity without burning you out or increasing the chance of injury. I like doing interval work. It's definitely a nice change of pace (no pun intended). Talkt to you soon.

Awesome Tekno! Speedwork is challenging but fun! I think you will like this addition to your workouts. Last year I just got up everyday and did the same thing over and over. This year, I have been doing a trail run, mid-week tempo run, a speed workout and a long run. I like this approach much better! I am also highly dependent on running in groups. I can run alone, but I like the comraderie and I think it pushes me to work harder.

Tech: Speed work? Where and with whom? Towson? Bel Air/Fallston? A buddy & I might start speed work training on Friday evenings -- tough since most people do LSDs on Saturdays (and I'm also playing baseball on weekends). Hi. Well some of the people are Team In Training runners and the rest are just people who know the coach or know someone else who goes out there for the speedwork. It's open to anyone basically. We run up in Bel Air. Every Wednesday night at 6pm at Patterson Mill Middle/High School, it's near the Festival shopping center (Kohl's, Klein's, etc). They seem to have a good mixture of runners. There were fast ones that were running 1:30 400s and then there were ones like me running 2:30 400s. |
