Very flushed - is this normal?

I'm a beginning runner (using the couch potato to 5k program). I've noticed that pretty soon into my jogs (after about 7 mins), my face becomes EXTREMELY red and my entire head feels like it's on fire. This is probably a stupid question, but I'm wondering if that's normal or if it means I'm overdoing it? I've been a regular user of the elliptical machine and never noticed this prior to switching to the treadmill. Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated!

I'm going to assume from your user name that you're female, so forgive me if I'm wrong. Perhaps it is caused by reactions of your skin due to sweat mixing with hair products, make up, etc.

Re: Very flushed - is this normal?
hey, I to get red faced while running. My blood pressure is good and so is everything else accoriding to my DR. I don't have the burning tho. I think it's a normal reaction to exercise tho. Some peoples pigment just gets red and flushed while pushing the pace a little. I would get a physical and make sure everything is a ok. Other then that I would not worry about it. Try slowing down some and see if it gets better.

Re: Very flushed - is this normal?
Well it's definately not a stupid question. I used to get really really really red after a run. I was hot, but I wouldn't describe it as being on fire. After I got in better shape though, it started to die down. I didn't stay as red as long and I cooled down quicker. I agree with trying to slow down a bit. Probably help some.

Re: Very flushed - is this normal?
How much of a warm up are you doing? I found my face was red, hot, and burning if I didn't warm up properly when I was starting out. It should go away as you get in better running shape. Running is very different from elliptical.

Re: Very flushed - is this normal?

My whole life I have gotten very red faced and flushed during hard exercise and running, especially in the heat. It isn't usually too bad if I work out in the AC. I can't speak to your situation, but for me that is totally normal. Everyone always makes a big deal out of making sure I am ok until they get used to it. It is just the way my fair and already pink/ruddy skin reacts. And hey, my scalp always itches in the beginning too. But as soon as I am drenched in sweat, the iching subsides.

Re: Very flushed - is this normal?
I have also always gotten a red face. It's really splotchy and conspicuous, and it does get pretty hot, though I wouldn't go so far as to say burning hot. I don't have normally ruddy skin, but people have commented on my post-workout face since middle school P.E. I have also always been a terrible runner, and fairly out of shape. I assumed it was because I was out of shape, but maybe it just has to do with your circulatory system and skin.

Re: Very flushed - is this normal?

Hey there,

Well like you my face looks like a bright red tomato when I run, people have even thought I had severe sun burn, and it normally last at least 1hr after the run.

I think its because its just how my body releases heat, I dont' really get hot anywhere else, legs and arms are always warm but I never sweat from there. To be honest I'd say it was a mixture of just your body working that way, and the fact that its probably not used to that level of exertion.

Keep going !
