can I do a half ironman if I'm a newbie?

Hello! I have never ran more than a mile before in my life... that is
until recently. I started running about a month ago, and currently the
longest I've ran without stopping is 3.6 miles (a big feat for me!).
Anyway, I wanted to do a half ironman in September (that means 13.1
miles of running). I'm 19, and my parents are worried it's too much for
me since I've never ran before. Do you think I'm over-doing it, or is
this an attainable goal? I really want to do it!
Thanks!

Re: can I do a half ironman if I'm a newbie?
Can't say much for anybody but me, but I just ran/walked my first 5K last week in 43:11. I've got a treadmill at home as well and need to lose at least 10lbs. I've logged into "RunnersWorld.com" and subscribed to their magazine. My son runs marathons and has been encouraging me. I've signed up for a half marathon in October. Anyway, Runners World has a whole program for newbies and training for a half. If you're in decent shape with no underlying health problems I don't see why you can't try. To make your folks feel better, go visit a doctor and get cleared. Did I mention, I'm in the same boat as you "newbie" wise except I'm 58 years old? If I can try, so can you. Never stop trying. Maddy

Re: can I do a half ironman if I'm a newbie?
Are you saying a half marathon or half ironman? I would say a half marathon is certainly feasible for most people in the time frame you mention. A half ironman is entirely different. You didn't mention your biking or swimming experience. Not that it isn't possible, but the running is MUCH harder in triathlon because of biking. I've only done sprint triathlons, and the run is only 3 miles, but it doesn't feel like 3 miles because the biking is rough on the legs. My personal opinion is that you should look for a sprint or olympic triathlon before trying a half ironman. I suspect either a sprint or olympic triathlon would give you the exposure to triathlons that could let you decide whether you'd like to try to move up to a half ironman.

Re: can I do a half ironman if I'm a newbie?
I agree with the other posting, that you might be taking on a little too much with the Half Ironman in September. I've been doing triathlons for three years and I started off by doing a few olympic distance tri's then last year I did my first half ironman...it's a lot harder than you think. Your legs are really tired out after a 56 mile ride and it makes the 13 mile run very difficult. In addition you are cutting it very close to train for a half ironman, most training programs reccomend 16 weeks to train and given you don't have any triathlon experience I would reccomend more than that. Try an olympic distace before taking on the challange of the half ironman, so use in rushing it and taking a chance that you might hurt yourself.

I agree and will go even further and suggest you start with a sprint triathlon before moving up to the olympic distance.
