Breathing Question

Hi everyone, I'm really new to this running thing. I am in my second week of a newbie training schedule. Things have been going very well. Each time out to run I find that I can run a little longer and it seems to be getting a little easier. Yesterday I set out to run, I stretched, did my 5 minute walk and off I went. I ran 1/4 of a mile and then walked. my lungs burned liked fire. My breathing was more labored than usual. My usual recovery time between runs didnt seem to be enough time for me to recover but I started my run again when I should have and I ran another 2 mins and then walked. I decided to walk out the remainder of my time because my breathing hurt so bad. By the time I got home, I was wheezing and coughed everytime I tried to take a big breath. Needless to say this kinda scared me. I had an inhaler I used which helped but for the rest of the evening I was totally whipped. I have never experience anything like this while running. Has anyone ever experienced this and what could I have done differently or watch out for in the future? I really liking running but I have to say that I am a little scared now. Any advice for this newbie?

Re: Breathing Question
You say you had an inhaler. Do you have asthma? Exercise can induce an asthma attack. Have you had to use the inhaler before? If so, what were the circumstances?

Re: Breathing Question

I should have noticed the crna at the end of your name. :D I've heard other people complain of burning lungs. But not everyone has mentioned wheezing. Do you have allergies? Is there a lot of pollen right now? Are there any forest fires burning near you?

The wheezing/coughing episode would concern me too. You should probably get it checked out. As I'm sure you know, people still die from asthma attacks. You could have a new onset of exercise induced asthma. Or you may have developed some seasonal allergies. It certainly won't hurt to see your doctor. Good-luck. :)
