Back from a 4.5 mile run, more than easy effort, and I am smiling! only a small tender spot on the left inside of the knee, which I will ice right now. Tomorrow a bit longer, then step back, go longer, and by weekend, do 20 big ones...HOPEFULLY!
Gotta go ice.
"Another 21 miler" is daughter's summary of my Sunday predawn jaunt, slower through 16 than with last weekend's 7-10 degree cooler adventure but with a faster last 5 (still not to race pace, alas). Two dogs adopted me miles 9-15 before deciding a nearby pond was more interesting. The first hour offered owls, deer, and one skunk ready to defend the roadside. There was enough ground fog to make sound and light pull some cool tricks.
Immer, even your long runs sound poetic
You have a way with words. Are you a famous author? Come on, you can tell us!
Conditions look good for my 15 miles in Chicago tomorrow morning. Looking forward to reading everyone's updates also. MCMRon, any details on the 17.5 today? Talk to you soon.

Karl's Run For Clean Water
Doing the miles so they don't have to.
Conditions in central new york look great too. I was supposed to run this am, got up at 6:30, felt like crap, put on the coffee, looked out and was very ominous. Then checked the radar and it looked real bad! Shortly after that it started raining. So I decided I can run tomorrow or Monday to do my 18 miles, and went back to bed. Feel great now, so I'll go run short today, and do the big one tomorrow.
Good luck to all doing their runs this weekend!
Ken
Got in my longest run ever today! did 17 miles starting at 7:00 AM this morning. I decided ( for some ungodly reason) to try to run through the 17 with just stopping for replenishing water at a couple of fountains. I wanted to see how I would do after the run/walk method I used for the 15 miler a couple of weeks ago. BIG MISTAKE!! I paid the price and hit the wall around 14 miles. I struggled the rest of the way with a couple more walk breaks. Still, finished in 2:54:24, for an overall 10:15 pace, within my original goal pace of a 10 to 11 m/m mile pace. I'll use the run walk method again for my 18 miler next week to see how I do. I am sore, but feeling pretty good. I am heading out to the pig roast in awhile and consuming some well earned beer and bbq pig. I will gladly crawl in to my tent tonight.
I made a few milestones today...longest runof my life (17 miles), highest weekly miles (33.5), and highest monthly total ( 119.5), and I way the same I did my freshman year in hight school which was 1977 (170 lbs.) I started at 210 last November. I am happy with that.
Hope everyone's runs went well. Good luck to everyone at Va. Beach!! My sister will be running there as well.
Wow Kris! Congratulations on lots of milestones! Way to push through even after hitting a wall. Great job!!
I do today what you won't, so tomorrow I do what you can't.

Great job Kris, the running, the total mileage, and the weight. Go and enjoy the beer and bbq'd pig.
I set out at around 630 this morning, for a 17 miler. I got in 17.76 miles. I should have gone that extra 1/4 mile to round out that number, but decided to call it a day. I felt really positive today and it was a good running day. I promptly took an ice bath and then took a short nap. I'm just alittle bit sore, not bad at all! I'm looking forward to 9 tomorrow. What is Hal Higdon trying to kill me???!!! YES! I think he is!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, LEN. You suggested that I try moleskin for my blisters, and they worked wonderfully today. No blisters at all! I am amazed.
I'm thinking about all the VA beach runners! Wishing you a great race day and PRs for everyone. Have fun!!!
Way to go Ruby. That's great after all the problems you've been having. Did you use the moleskin on your feet or your shoes? Both work but if on your feet, you have to do it before you have blisters.
We've come this far and it's still the same,
Runnin' out here in the rain.
Just one more mile, if only you could fly.
(Apologies to T. Rush and J. Tempchin, for the paraphrase)
I placed it on my feet and where I have blisters, but they're old blisters and not tender anymore. They worked out really well. I've been plagued by blisters this year, in addition to the feet problems. My feet are sore today, but that's just something I'm gonna have to deal with until after the MCM.
The run felt so good, that I kept thinking about going through with that 50K and DNFing if I had to. But then I came to my senses, when I realized that the race is next Saturday...HELLO...NOT!!!
Awesome job Kris!!! I'll be doing my 17 tomorrow and it's also my longest run EVER!! I can't wait to finish it and say I just ran 17 miles!
YEAH Ruby, an another long run well done. I'm hoping to do 16 tomorrow. We'll see what happens.
Congrats to all who managed to go the distance today, best wishes to all doing so tomorrow or Monday, and hoping for better for all who can't right now because of schedules, health, or weather!
Thank you, Charlotte. Hope you enjoy your 16 on Sunday.
Wheeeee! Happy dance! Twirl! I've never done them to tell you for sure, but I cannot imagine there is a drug better than a good run. 17 miles in a park around a lake. Started early and damnit, I was so fast, I feel like I channeled Jimmy (although I know Jimmy is a lot faster than this, I can pretend I know what it feels like to fly)!
First few miles I went out conservatively because who knew what the day was going to hold (miles 1-5, average pace: 10:13). Then, I just started feeling strong and the pace kind of picked up on its own (miles 6-11, average pace: 9:31, including mile 11 which came in at 8:59 and included this absurd fist pumping wiggle dance while running after I saw that split). Now, with 6 miles left I had to make a decision about whether I should try to keep my fast pace or slow down. I thought back to a thread Karl had where he kept his pace as long as he could and I figured I'd see where it got me and if I had to slow down I already had a good run. Miles 12-17 average pace: 8:47!!!! Holy sh!t, I can't run that fast! But I did run that fast!! My last mile was 8:39 and my last three miles were 30 seconds faster than my 5K last weekend! Overall pace for the run was 9:28, basically 30 seconds/mile faster than the last long run I did (15 miles at 9:55) and a full minute faster than my long runs should be based on PMP. I ran 17 miles in 2:40?! Maybe that sub-4 is within reach after all? Wheeeeee
Off to relax for a bit then going to the theater with my girlies later this evening! Happy Sunday!!!
I do today what you won't, so tomorrow I do what you can't.
