I keep telling myself that! But I don't listen.
Hmmm bed, that a novelty! Good run Dave. Now go back to bed!
Did my 1st 20 yesterday!! The weather was ok (for our area) and I finished at 3:40. After mile 17 I went down hill fast and did alot of walk/running. Other then some tender knee's today I feel pretty good. My plan calls for 13 next and then one more 20. After struggling so much I am beginning to wonder if one more 20 is really going to be enough. For those of you with alot more experience, do I settle down and have faith in my plan or try and get another 20/23 in there prior to MCM???
Thanks everyone, I admire all your energy and advise.
Hi Everyone,
Once again, great job on the long runs this weekend.
Nita, I like the consistency of your progression runs. Nice pace for 18 miles.
Ken, that's an excellent time for that half, and with a bathroom break to boot. I'll take that any day.
Kat, congratulations on your PR. That's a wonderful accomplishment given the challenging course. Well done!
I got going on my run this morning at about 4:45. The temp / humidity was 82 degrees / 30%. There was a very slight breeze out of the south that made things a bit more comfortable. Target pace for this 15 miles was PMP plus 20 seconds, which worked out to 8:50. My warm up mile split was 9:10, which was comparable to last week in Chicago. I spent the next couple miles trying to settle into a good rhythm. Miles 2 - 5 had splits ranging from 8:39 to 8:46. I had about a mile to go before getting back to my house, where my cooler with iced towels was waiting. But I felt pretty good and decided to put off the pit stop until the next lap. Miles 6 - 10 were pretty consistent. I had splits of 8:47, 8:48, 2 @ 8:49 and another at 8:50. By now the sun had come up, but it hadn't gotten blazing hot yet. And amazingly, the breeze was still pretty steady, which was a little unusual for right around sunrise. Anyway, with 5 miles to go, I felt okay. Mile 11 - 8:51. At that point, I was thinking that I probably wouldn't need a pit stop at all on this run. Yeah, I was sweating pretty good. But my drink in my Camelbak was still cool enough, and everything was feeling okay. Just as I was considering that, the clip for my drinking tube came partially unclipped from the strap. I hate it when that happens! If I didn't stop to fix it, the tube would wind up flapping all over the place. I could have just tucked it through the strap, but it would be a bit of a pain to get out and drink from. So I completed mile 12 (8:44) and that brought my back by the house. I quickly downed some water, threw an iced towel over my head, and fixed my clip. A couple minutes later, I was off again. Less than 3 miles to go, and I felt pretty good. Initially, I had entertained thoughts of going a couple extra miles, but I changed my mind and decided to stick with the 15 miles and run the last 3 miles as best I could. I made a mental note of my time at the 13.1 mile mark (1:55:20), which was actually only 19 seconds off my best race time. My last two splits were 8:48 and 8:13. Total time: 2:11:30. Average pace: 8:46. My only thought is that I am scheduled for 20 next week. Jumping up the extra 5 miles will be a bit challenging, but the target pace is a little slower and the forecast is for much cooler morning temperatures. Hopefully, that will be enough to get me through it. But I was very happy with this outcome. Just trying to knock down each workout one at a time at this point, and trust that my preparation will be good enough come race day. Have a great week everyone. Thanks for being a continued source of motivation. Talk to you soon.

Karl's Run For Clean Water
Doing the miles so they don't have to.
Karl, you are amazing!! What a phenomenal run! You are going to do amazing things at MCM this year... imagine what you can accomplish when the temps are20 degrees cooler! Every week you continue to surpass your expectations. And coming close to a half-marathon PR during a long run is just outstanding! Keep it up!!! ![]()
I do today what you won't, so tomorrow I do what you can't.
Up Next: Rest! And celebrating my JFK50 finish with a vacation in Roma! | My Running Blog
Karl,
Nice run brother! Your training is by far some of the most consistant training going this year. Awesome job on getting the long runs in. Your hammering this thing out just right. And sooner then later you will get into the fall air of the desert and I will be envious as this and running go so well together.

Very nice 17 miler this morning. Avg pace of about 9:45, probably could have been faster but I kept reminding myself to slow down, I really wanted it to be an SLD, weather was nice in the mid 80s and relatively low humidity. Now I'm here icing my knees and relaxing a bit before I need to head out and take Brenda shopping. Today is Brenda weekend, which means we get to do whatever she wants... ![]()
Screw Jane Fonda!!!
Karl -- awesome run, man!
I did 18 today and intentionally set out to run slower and had a pretty great first half. The weather was MUCH nicer this weekend than last with temperatures in the high 60s and humidity in the 80% range. Normally I take a water/Gu break around the 5th mile just slowing down a bit so I don't choke but I was in a rhythm and wanted to keep going. By the time I got to mile 9 I was still feeling good. The return trip was a little more taxing and the legs were really feeling it. Whether it was last weekend's race or the lack of any significant running during the week, I slowed down but was able to keep the walking down to 1/10th or 1/8th of a mile for every mile or so running after mile 12. But I was definitely slower. The knees were feeling it. Still, it was LSD and I was fine with my 9:31 pace. It was a solid run but not a spectacular run.

You know, I'm relieved once in a while to hear that you had a run that was less than spectacular....it makes me think that maybe you aren't some sort of evil running-bot.
You're still doing PDR this coming weekend, right??

Isn't PDR in two weeks? (The 21st?) And yes, I'll be there. Shooting for 1:45 or better.
Yeah, it is, actually, I just can't read a calendar without my glasses on. Apparently.
I'll be there, shooting for a sweaty hug from the guy in the MCM shirt with one blue eye and one brown eye, at about 1:45:45. ![]()

What? Now I have to wear my MCM shirt?
I was going to wear my R&R shirt. ![]()

You're doing MCM? If so, that leaves you with a pretty long taper.
(If you're doing Chicago you're right on the money.) Generally I would say follow your plan. On the other hand, it won't hurt to repeat those two weeks (the 13 and the 20) Sept 28 and Oct 4.
We've come this far and it's still the same,
Runnin' out here in the rain.
Just one more mile, if only you could fly.
(Apologies to T. Rush and J. Tempchin, for the paraphrase)
Tactum, Jerry, Jesus, and Karl:
Karl, you are unbelievable. I don't even understand how someone can improve that much in a year. You and Jerry never cease to amaze me with your increasing speeds
Great job, guys!
Jesus, how can you shop today after a 17-mile run? I'm totally spent after those, just feel like the life has been sucked out of me. I'm impressed. I can't even get my husband to go shopping when he's NOT running ![]()
Tactum, great job on the 20-miler yesterday. Congrats! Personally, I try to do a couple of 20's and one 21 or 22-miler before tapering, if for no other reason than a confidence booster. You've still got plenty of time, as Len said, before MCM. Good luck!
Ok, just finished the long run from he!!. 18 very, very, very long miles. Ran the first 6 with lots of effort and almost decided to call it quits, then decided to do the 9 min run 1 min walk routine. Did that all the way and still had a he!! of a time finishing, but it's done. Don't know why it was so tough, but it was. Finished in 3:07:47 Well next week it'll be 13.1 in Montreal and we'll see how that goes. Glad to read that everyone else had great runs. That does give me hope. Have a great day everyone.
