Wanting to stay fit with an extreme budget

I am very new to pretty much everything. After highschool I didn't play much sports just because life didn't really allow it. Earlier in 07 I gained over 30 pounds in a three month period and it wasn't until I stopped drinking soda, and began working at JCP that I finally lost some of that weight. I live in a very rural area, and all I have to workout with is a jumprope, treadmill, and me. I have no money to go to the nearest gym, twenty minutes away(especially with gas prices), but I need to figure out the best plan for me right now at my current state. I way about 174 and I am 5'8". I want to tone out my body and stay fit, because I feel extremely out of shape. I can only do a maximum of twenty pushups in one set, then I just start doing less and less. Because I feel so out of shape and my endurance level is low, I feel extremely unconfident and never finish anything I start. Lately I have been gradually gaining weight even though I am not eating as much.

lol I know this is a lot for a first post, but let me know what you think I could do for myself. I am getting married and moving soon so anything that needs to be bought is a no go.

God bless and thanks guys!

P.S. The pic of me in my profil was from 06, I am about 20 something pounds bigger.

Re: Wanting to stay fit with an extreme budget
Working out on your own can be tough for some because no one is there to hold you accountable. It can be even tougher without something to workout for. We have a saying in the endurance industry that goes, "stop working out and start training." Wanting to 'tone out your body and stay fit' are okay goals, but you can do better. Refine your goals to be more specific. How much do you want to weight? What size waistline do you want? What do you want to be able to do that is active that you are not able to do now? With a specific goal in mind constantly, like your wedding perhaps, you have something more tangible to work towards. Does any of this make sense? What about the 100 Push up challenge? or running in a half marathon (13.1 miles)? Do you have a bike? Start a running club with friends from church? A good pair of running shoes may be the best investment you ever make... What are you thoughts on what I've suggested?

Re: Wanting to stay fit with an extreme budget

You can get thin by watching what you eat; fit and strong by working out, but you have to combine the two if you want to see the six-pack.

There are some killer body-weight strength routines; there's yoga and pilates; there's some marine-corp type workouts that only use a bag of sand. Look around a bit and you'll find some very challenging workout routines that do not require expensive equipment.

I agree it's very important to have a specific goal. In my own case, I found the problem with a goal like "being in good shape" is that it might not get me out the door for an early morning run because I may decide, at 5, that I am in good shape and could use another hour of sleep. If my goal is to lose ten pounds, I don't give myself the same sort of wiggle room - either I weigh less or I don't.

After my last knee surgery, my first goal was simply to show up. I forgot all about times and weight and everything else and just made a committment that I would change clothes and head out for my walk, or try a little yoga, or get the push-ups and sit-ups done like I had planned. Consistency is very important and the first thing I had to do was re-establish the habit of exercising. It didn't matter to me if I exercised for ten minutes or an hour, I just wanted to show up for each session.

One of the amazing things about exercising, at least to me, is that the more consistently I exercise the more energy I have. It's a hard rock to start rolling, but once it gets going, everything changes.

Goals come and go - keep track of what you've done and know where you're going. My goals get me out of bed early in the morning. But it's the chance to see the sun rising over the mountains, or catch a deer grazing by the side of the road - or today, a long trek to pick some wild berries for pancakes tomorrow morning - that keeps me going year after year.

That's fantastic news. The 100 pushup challenge is really popular right now. That's so cool to hear its working for you too. If you want to look into the vide, here's the url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ro73QWwuaFA

Keep up the great work and please keep checking in with us on your progress!

Thanks Toby, now I'm thinking about the 100 push-up challenge. As if I needed another goal to meet! :p I'm a pathological over-achiever!

Re: Wanting to stay fit with an extreme budget

I posted a calorie calculator on the site here. If you go through my Profile you should be able to find it. This will help you to find the correct amount of calories to eat for your weight loss goals. Even more so it will tell you what to get those calories from. This will help you trim fat and gain muscle. I have lost 120 pounds so far with this plan. This is the first step to any workout in my mind because if you are not eating the right stuff you will do poorly and feel poorly when you go to workout or "train". The plan requires no special shakes or foods. Just that you eat right. You tookthe first step by getting rid of the pop. I lost my first 20 pounds by not drinking pop. I found it easier to lose when I stoped drinking diet pop as well. I am no expert at fitness I am learing as well I am going to follow the advice of many of the experts on here but I am out running now 20+ miles a week. So you can do it it is much better though when you have others to do it with.

Good Luck and keep going just don't quite
