Advice needed on next 5K

I just ran my first 5k! Time was 33:58, I had to walk a bit during parts of the race, I felt like there was just no endurance in me. My question is how do I get to the point of continuous running? I registered for another 5k on July 19th and my goal is to run it non-stop. Does anyone have any tips on how to up my endurance? Since having my 2nd son 3 1/2 months ago, I weight train at the gym 3 days a week and do cardio 5 days a week. Running is HARD work!

Thanks for any wisdom you can lend me.

Re: Advice needed on next 5K

I just did my first 5k, too. My time was 33:59 and I ran continuously. I'm thinking maybe you need to slow down; maybe take the first couple miles at a slower pace and speed up at the end. I could have kept going and going and I hate distance running! But I'm new too so what do the pros think?

PS: you wouldn't happen to have just done the HB July 4th open 5k?? If so, you may have been the woman who finished just in front of me pushing a running stroller (?)

Re: Advice needed on next 5K

A few things will help with your endurance. One is to establish and perhaps increase your base mileage - the miles you run every week. The rule of thumb is to increase your mileage by no more than 10% per week. Around 20 miles per week should be enough to get you through the 5K non-stop and should help improve your time.. Two is to increase your long run of each week. Work one run each week to 5 or 6 or 7 miles and you will know you can comfortably finish a 5K. Three, like cannon1229 said, is to know your pace, what pace you are capable of holding for 5K. Starting out too fast really affects your pace in the latter stages of a race. On the other hand, if you start a little slow, you'll find you have more left at the end.

I love it when Len gives advise, we're not worthly!

My first 5k was over 34:00 and I didn't stop running once. Ha! maybe I should have and might have done better! You'll accomplish your goal next time if you listen to Len.

Re: Advice needed on next 5K

Those are really great times! Don't try to beat the lead runners time. Just beat your time. So the next time you run a 5K try and make in in 32+ min. and then 31+ min. and so on.

Keep Running!
