Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - August

Spareribs, it'll be interesting to see how you run with this rejuvenated heart of yours. You must be more than a little curious yourself, there's some fast times in your future I think.

Thursday,

Another 3 mile recovery jog today. Resting h.r. is just about back to normal and only a bit of leg soreness left, I think I'm healed. From everything I've read, to avoid overtraining, don't run fast if your legs are sore. Should be simple enough to remember, eh?

Euph... I don't seem to get over-use injuries. I stretch religiously and that may have something to do with it, but for whatever reason, I can run myself into the ground 'til I can't move and nothing breaks. At least not yet anyway.  I think it's a curse...

Thursday:  1.5 miles walking on indoor track, slow, but happy with it.  I quit only because I haven't been here before and wanted to see how the rest of the day would feel.  Plan is for 2 miles tomorrow nice and slow.

I told KS I might have my wife drive me out to Ft. Worth to watch him race, but neighbors are making our food.  They don't need to do this, as I am looking forward to cooking pretty soon and it would have been awkward to say no to them.  But I am rooting for KS in spirit.  Spareribs

Wow. It was only a couple days ago that they were taking the tubes out. I had to do a double take.

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - August

Morning all,

Thurs morning 6 miles ez.  Then a quick shower and a 6.5 hour drive to Ft. Worth.  Raced the trinity 5k last night.  +- 200 ran the race including a couple high school xc teams whose coached stopped them at the 3 mile mark for time.  Maybe just a few of them got me.  It was 100 degrees when we left for the race at 6 pm last night and a bank sign said 94 when we were coming home at 8:45.  Race is run on the trinity river park/bike/run asphalt trail.   Fortunately there were spots of shade to run in some.  Ran a 19:09 which I was really pleased with in the heat and after the drive.  Felt sluggish dluring warm up and couldn't snap out of that.  Won 50-54 a.g.  O.A. masters was a guy who just clicked over the 40 y.o. barrier in 18:10.   Likely I was in top ten of the race.

This morning dw had to run a 17 miler and I was scheduled for a 20.  Started at 4:45 @ 83 degrees and we ran 18.  I was out there long enough to run 22 probably.  Throat is a bit sore as I'm not used to this heat without the humidity.

Wedding rehearsal for my son this afternoon and wedding tomorrow afternoon.  Then home Sunday.

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - August

Great to talk with KS last night after his race.   We agreed I could write his RR which I put in the daily on Kick.  Hope I caught the essence of it, but my personal feeling is that it's tough to race at night and after an all day car trip and at those temps.  He did great.

Another 1.5 miles at the Y track to day.  This takes me about 30 minutes, which is about stroll pace, not like a power walk.  I will learn how each workout affects me because of variances in the way I feel.  For example, yesterday I quit when I didn't really need to; felt great.  Today the whole thing was  a labor.  There is no urgency to do everything at once, so I have allowed for all sorts of variables.   Spareribs

Milestones, milestones!  Today was my first outdoor walk, 2 miles, one hill, very slow of course, but happy that I don't have to always ask my wife to drive me to the Y.  Spareribs

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - August

You're doing great Spareribs, progressing practically on a daily basis.  Awesome stuff!

ksrunr, nice race!

Friday, 3 miles easy.

Saturday, 7 miles easy.  My resting heart rate's returned to normal, but I've been taking it easy due to a little lingering leg soreness.  Tomorrow's weather is supposed to be good so I'm going to go med. long and drop the pace for a few miles coming home.  We'll see what that brings...

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - August

My wife got up early and drove us out to our club at the lake, where she ran 4 and I walked 2 in about the same time, so that worked out fine.  Nap time.  Spareribs

Spareribs, I was reading the other day a seasoned runner's worst enemy when it comes to getting hurt is their mental toughness.  The theory being we push aside pain and run when we shouldn't.  Anyway, your mental toughness is serving you well lately, you're doing great.

Sunday

14 miles.  First 9 easy, 10, 11 and 12 @ half marathon pace, 13 and 14 cool down miles.

The nice part was my legs didn't hurt...

Great start on the road back. What you are facing is real.  This is much more important that any of the times we all have ever run.

Congrats

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - August

Good morning to our small but mighty group of runners this morning.  Got home yesterday from Ft. Worth.   Ran 7.25 brisk miles in the heat with a partner.  5.75 easy miles this morning and will get a few more tonight.  This week calls for 78 miles with longest 17.

Good to sleep in my own bed again.  Dogs missed us.  All is good.

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - August

A bit of a cutback day in that I walked 1.5 miles on the indoor Y track, air-conditioned too!  This takes about 30 minutes.

Thanks all.  I don't know what I would do if the Olympics weren't on.  I am one lucky man to have timed things this way.   Spareribs
