Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

good morning all,  thanks for all your support.  I plan on a recovery run tonight.  Today is a warmer day but the humidity is low.  Can you believe that it is football season already?

spicegeek - thanks for your support.  Are you getting excited over your HM in Chicago?  It should be a fun race and I am still undecided over running it.  Good luck with the long run.

dari - great runs! Thanks so much for your kind words.  I assume the vacation season is over for the Cape Cod area.  Enjoy the gym.  You are a really good runner.  You must have some really pretty routes to run in your part of the country.

joe - thanks for your support.  I am glad your long run went better this week.  Just like clockwork you got the thread started.  The miles are really beginning to add up for you now.  Are you doing more cross training?  So are your rooting for the Cowboys or Texans this year?

macd - thanks for your kind response. It was a great race for the family.  I didn't meet running rach. I agree with the marathon timing, I just need to get in a few really long runs over the next few weeks so I can enter a race knowing that I can hold up over the distance.  Congrats!!!! 10.5!!!!!  You are ready for your HM.  I bet your DD's are so proud of you.  That was a great total month of running.

chuck - thanks for your support.  I really enjoy the running with the family.  I bet someday you will get to race with your DS.  How is he doing?  Be safe.

take care all.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

10.5 miles today at a little under an 11 mm pace - so that is a VERY goos indicator that I should be able to maintain an 11mm at the race in 2 weeks.  This was my first 20+ mile week in a while !

Runjr - yes not that I have my last long training run out the way I feel better and excited about the race - I`m going to start cutting back a little  on the work outs this week - I have a 4 mile race next Sat so I`ll just run that and skip the weight training and take a complete rest day Sunday -

Chuck - stay safe from the storms !

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Happy Sunday all!

Chuck, have you evacuated? Hope the worst of it is missing you! Take care.

Joe, good week! Next week's plan sounds very doable. Are you expecting some rain from Gustav?

runjr, thanks--I am feeling more confident that I will be able to run the half, though doubtful about breaking 3 hrs. I plan to get to a long run of 12 before then; shouldn't be a problem as I have nearly 7 weeks. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

spicegeek, great job on your 10.5! Look out Chicago!

I think I rested a little too much after my long run yesterday--I was sore everywhere when I got up this morning! After some stretching, weights and biking, I'm feeling much better now. But I need to get some work done... the long weekend is fast disappearing!

A great labor day to all!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Hi everyone,

Well I just about have internet so will post whilst I can. Our 'broadband' is currently running at the speed of old dial up internet so i'm hoping i'll actually be able to post this

I went for my 10 yesterday and actually it felt pretty good. I was running short on time, but tried to keep the pace down and completed it in 1:46 something... That puts me on 33 miles for the week and 101 for the month (a little low as I only ran once the week we were away but i'm pleased to be over 100 again). Rest day today - we were supposed to be going canoeing, but we woke up to thunder storms and decided against it.

Joe - Glad that 3.5 went better... I'm sure those miles will be building in no time! I remember when I considered 3.5 miles to be a major long run I think I may go for the HM for the WWFoR but not race it - just run as a long run... I've still only covered the HM distance once (in my race) so I think it'll do me good to do the distance.

Spicegeek - I bet you could get used to all those kisses! I did run yesterday as I felt better in the morning, but I'm always thinking carefully about whether i'm overdoing things. Believe it of not I think of you and your advice / what you went through with your injury and it makes me consider twice what I am doing. Otherwise I think i'd have had an overuse injury a while ago as I'm not good with limits... It's funny - I was reading my runners world mag and it had this article about how to enjoy running and they were saying about feeling guilty when missing a run... that's me! I think I need to relax on myself sometimes and just enjoy it Great job on that 10.5 miles!

Misswendy - how'd the 16 go? I'm impressed with that distance! when is your full?

Chuck - I hope Gustav misses you. I know it's serious as it's dominating the news here too! I'm thinking of you... let's us know all's ok as soon as you can

Runjr - Your race report is amazing! I feel really proud for your family and I don't even know them Congratulation to them both and to you of course... an amazing experience for you all and a memory to cherish.

Dari - Good job on those 6 milers! In some ways getting through the tough ones feels more rewarding and really works the determination and motivation... at least that's what I tell myself Enjoy the gym!

Macd - Amazing to here that you have broken the double digit barrier! And a great total for the month too - A cutback week is probably a good idea if your legs are feeling tired (yeah - i'm a fine one to talk seeing as I should probably cutback too) you've already got a long run enough to run a HM so 7 weeks is plenty of time to be prepared!

Well - the internet died again but it is back up (4 hours later) so i'm going to sneak this post in whilst I can.

Happy running all and chat tomorrow,

Cara x

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

hey everyone, the storm looks like it's pretty much going to miss us. Might get some bands off of it but nothing bad. Winds only 35 or so they say. I hope Misswendy and Andahuff will be ok also. Joe , you and Andahuff far enough inland? I hope all stay safe. We stayed, going to bed early and get up early. Thanks for all the concern. Misswendy, hope you got your run in. You could have your DH drive 16 miles away tomorrow and run with the wind at your back for a pr! Seriously, please stay safe!

hi all, just a quick check in.

spicegeek - great run, you are ready!!! The 4 miler is a good tune up for your HM. You are going to do great.

macd - there is no doubt in my mind that you are going to be successful. Maybe I will be there to see it if I run my full there.

cara - great run and solid month. I can't imagine old dial up speeds. Is there another race in sight for you? Any new house projects?

misswendy, joe, andahuff, chuck please be safe.  We will be praying for you.

Good evening...hope this finds ALL safe and protected...DH and I are praying for all the Louisianans and everyone else in the storm's way to be safe!

I DID IT!!! I ran my HM...and I really RAN the whole thing...I was super pumped!  And I just made my goal, which was under 2:15...still waiting for the official, but I believe it will be around 2:14!! ha ha...well, I am pretty proud of myself, seeings though I still felt pretty crappy from my cold/cough I had since the Friday a week before the race...and I hadn't run my 10 the weekend before, which I was STILL obsessing about at the starting line!!! But I left that thought fast and settled in to a nice 10mm pace, and pretty much kept that throughout...nike+ was nice asset...didn't feel like I was dragging hiney until mile 11, and my legs started to get pretty heavy, my right leg started to hurt, esp in my hip, but I kept on, and I'm glad i did...I set into a nice "sprint" at the end, the last .05 mile or so, and if I hadn't done that, I wouldn't have made my goal!! Which makes me think I spent +/- 4 minutes at water tables, or something, but it was well worth the water/gatorade!!!  The finisher's medal was SO SATISFYING to receive in the end   Will definitely do that distance/course again!

So I think i will keep the running up and try an EASY 5 on Tuesday or Wednesday, see how I feel by then...and a 6 or 7 Saturday...next run is the Komen Race for the Cure in Milwaukee!

Good night all!

Kevee-(I think, cant' remember if it was you or someone else, oops!) - sorry we didn't connect at the race!  LOTS of people!  Did you end up making it over to watch the race???

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Hey everyone.  I'm new to this forum.  I'm training for my first Hm on ocotber 4th.  Spicegeek saw my post on another forum and directed me over here :).

here is my post from earlier today...I've been running for 3 years "seriously" now and have run a few 5Ks.

But this will be my first HM. I've been upping the distance of my

weekly long run and decided to try a HM. I've gone to a 3 day a week

running schedule and it seems to be working better for my body and the

previous schedule I used of 4 days a week. I feel that I recover better

only doing 3 days a week.

As for my question...I usually run 5-7 miles on one run, a shorter

faster run on my second, and then the long run on my 3rd run of the

week. My long runs the past few Saturdays have gone 9, 10, and 11 miles

(in 1:40 fwiw). I plan on upping my distance on Saturdays by about 8-10

minutes per run over the next 2-3 weeks. That would take me to about

September 20th. With the race happening on October 4th how should I

attack the last week or training and the week of the race? I've heard

about tapering but really don't know how to go about it. Should I train

normally the week before the race? How should I go about tapering?

I have many questions as the HM approaches.  I'll post in this thread from here on out.  I'll be running an easy 5 or so miles tomorrow to help recover from yesterday. My calves are a little tight/sore.  My goal is to break 2 hours in the HM.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Morning everyone,

5.6 miles this morning. My legs felt tired the first few miles, but generally the run felt good - I pushed it a little for the last mile to get around 9mm pace and that felt great.

Chuck - glad to hear that storm is due to miss you. Hope everyone else has the same luck and that it's not going to be as bad as was feared.

Runjr - I tell you old dial up speeds are not fun. It took me 3 hours to download one pheddip episode! We are cancelling our broadband today and registering with a new one. I've got another 10k on 14th Sept, and then I need to start training again for a HM... I've signed up for the WWFoR HM but that'll probably be more of a long run for me rather than race. I'm supposed to be running a real race 2nd Nov but not committed to it yet. For some reason I am nervous to do another HM in case I don't do as well or better than before... You can tell me i'm silly if you like House projects are on hold at the mo as we've been so busy. Still got to finish the kitchen - just painting the walls and getting the floor done left though.

Rachel - congrats on a fab HM and well done to sticking to your race plan and making your time. Hope your hip is ok and that you recover quickly. Take it easy on your runs this week and listen to your body. Enjoy that medal - you earnt it!

Teabag - It sounds like you have a good base already for your HM so I think you will do fine. The last week or two before the race should be tapering. The best thing to do is check out a few plans on the internet and adjust your schedule in a similar way. The week of your race is all about taking it easy so just a couple of short runs is enough - putting in anything more will not help your prep and will only make you tired! I'm interested in your comment that you couldn't recover properly on 4 days a week - I used to have that problem too until I started running much slower on my easy run days. I now run 5 days a week without any problem - usually 3 of those at an easy pace which is around 2 min/mile slower than my 10k race pace and I have to really concentrate to keep it slow - I usually monitor it on my heart rate / pace combo. Obviously 3 days / week is fine but if you do want to up it, your could try slowing some and see if that helps... probably something for after your HM now Welcome by the way!

Anyway - best get back to work.

Hope everyone stays safe! Chat later,

Cara

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Hey everyone, hope everyone's running has been going great. I ran my first Half yesterday and I could definately tell me doing the crash course training wasn't the best idea, but it's a learning experience. I was soaked head to toe when I was finished. I ran through anything that resembled water, lol. I'm Definately buying me a belt with water on it next time. I missed the 9 mile watering hole and I about died. All in all it was a lot of Fun. Going next year, but going to stay all weekend and really enjoy the experience. I actually did a little bit better than I had intended. Always room for improvement. The biggest race I've ever done was maybe 2k people, but this was suppose to be 20k and that was pretty wild. Can't wait for New York or one the biggest ones. There are some FAST people out there. I knew people were quick, but some of those seemed Olympic fast. I'm going to rest and not move much today so hope everyone's Labor Day goes well. Catch up with everyone later this week.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Just home from the gym - yesterdays 10 miles is taking it`s toll - I did an hour with the kettle bells which is like all over resistance and cardio in one go -  looks at the bike and thought .. I`m done !!! I think had I been at my regular gym I would have pushed thro some cardio but I I really don`t care for the people at the gym local to my apartment and I just wanted to get out of there !

This afternoon ... I bake more pies !

People in the path of the storm - be safe !

Cara - good to hear from you !! yo bet I`m not complaining about all those kisses at all !! But my boxing trainer told one of the other guys off for kissing his client !! lol !!

runjr - yup I`m as ready as I`m going to get for Chicago ! When I was done yesterday I though - could I really run another 2.5 miles - and I thought yeah if I had to I could

Rach - Well done !! thats a great time !! we are so proud of you !!

teabag - welcome over !! .. I love that handle ! One thing I didn`t metion when I answered you other post - every 3 weeks step back your long run to 6 miles and run it at a 10K pace

Reeb - well done on the race !!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Hi all,

First of all congrats to all of the half marathoners - Run Jr,  very awesome that your dd and dw did so well with your "coaching".  They both must be on Cloud 9.  And congrats to you too on getting another half under your belt.  Rachel, awesome job!!  Water stops are a necessity in a half.   Reeb, congrats on your half also!  I said the same thing after the Chicago half last year - I am never running a long race without my water belt.  In hot weather, those few miles between water stations seem very long.

Spicey,l I am attempting your push up challenge and did week 2 day 1 today.  After one week, I did 23 knee assisted pushups in a row in the max-out trial - unbelievable!  I also did 3 "manly" pushups yesterday - I couldn't even do 1 last week!  I am definitely sold.   I hope to repeat the challenge doing all "manly" push ups after I finish the 6 weeks.   I love pies, which is why I seldom bake them!

Joe, sounds like your return to running is going well - yay!

Cara, sounds like your running is going great!  101 +  miles is wonderful.

My August was not great for running.  I am committed to coming  back in Sept - the cooler temps should work.  Of course it is close to 90 and sunny today so it is the treadmill for me.  I am still considering doing the Mardi Gras half on Feb. 1 - just don't know if I can justify the flight $$ right now with 2 kids in college with great money needs.

Happy Labor Day all.  Looks like Gustaf is behaving a little but some parts of LA will still get socked.  Hanna is looking scary for the Bahamas right now.
