Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

hi all went for an interval run last night and will just take an easy one tonight. The weather is hot today but it will be cool the rest of the week.

dari - sorry to hear of your dog problems. I hope you are doing better today. I hope you have a better run today.

running rach - the course was great for the HM. I ran Oshkosh HM in the spring through snow and the hilly Madison HM in May and this Lake County Race was excellent. When and where is the Komen? Maybe I can talk DW or DD to run it with me.

joe - no rain means no grass cutting.

macd - I haven't heard from Kevin for a while. Still joyful over the race this last weekend. We are looking for more races again. Good run yesterday and now a speeder run coming up. Keep pushing. You are really going to enjoy running your HM. DW and DD told me how much they loved it and that it is the fun after all the hard training miles.

cara - doesn't it always rain by you? Every movie I see from England shows rain and wind. Way to tough it out again. Family is doing great. DD back to college and DW back to work after their summers off.

take care all.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

hey everyone!

no dogs today!  I did 8 miles on our bike trail in 1:05 - pretty pleased with time.  I was pushing a bit more than usual because of unusually cool wonderful weather and amazing music.  Aside from weird "floating kneecap sensation" - all was right in my little plot on the planet.

Spicegeek & Mary:  Push-up challenge?  I would rather chew tinfoil.  I've found when I squint my eyes ever so slightly it makes things kind of blurry and looking at my loose arm skin doesn't even bother me much - ughh.

Miss Wendy:  I bow to you.  16 miles - wow.  I'm glad you are safe from storm - though you clearly could have outrun it if you had to.

Welcome Teabag259  good luck at your HM on Oct 4th, I do my first HM on October 19th - I made the hotel reservations yesterday for me & home cheering section.  All they had left was a smoking room.  We'll see if I can handle it.

Rachel - I vote for SUGAR!  I crave it more as I get older.  As evidenced by my addiction to Indiana Popcorn Kettlecorn variety (not cheddar or bbq) - I love sweet & salty - but sugar rules the day in our house.  Imagine my dismay when I went to Friendly's for ice cream last week and the girl at the window knew my name.

Now for the pie bakers in the bunch - I will gladly trade fresh basil pesto & tomato sauce from garden for pie any variety (except mincemeat YUK).

Chamblin/runjr - intervals?  Do you time yourself on your iPod?  What dedication.

MacD - hope your speedy run is fun.

Joe - cool three

Congratulations running rach  & reeb - you rock.

Off to pick up school clothes for DS who starts his senior year in HS tomorrow.  Where do the years go?

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

hey yall

we are still in jackson this afternoon waiting for a break in the tornadoes and flooding so that we can get home.  5.3 miles in the rain this morning. got some new miz and a new pr of shorts--at least something good came from gustav!

i cant shout out b/c this internet is sssssssssllllloooooowwww and dh's laptop is getting older. like some ppl i know, its got more and more complants as time goes on and wear and tear of overuse take their toll......LOL

pies:  dont use white peaches, i found they are bland after cooking. no kisses for bland.

dogs: i keep running and dont look at them, they feel as if they are the alpha dog that way. haha  i was bitten by a shitzu (sorry i cant spell) and have a scar to prove it.

rain:  looks like rain everyday the rest of the week here, so booo on running in it.

kids getting older:  time flies when your screaming on the run

gustav: no longer a hurricane, now a tornado machine

sweet/salty:  i eat sugar all day long if i can find it. has nothing to do with age cause no way am i old

socks:  why is it hard to find smaller size running socks

gu/shotbloks/gels:  i run so eat ing jelly beans is absolutely necessary

well, if i skipped any topics i will surely get them next time!

love to all

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Day 2 week 3 of the push up challange

25 17 17 15 max out 30 .. this was by FAR the toughest day yet - but the total == 104

5 mile run and some pull ups to round it all off

I can say with out a shadow of a doubt that blueberries and raspberries work just as well as peaches and strawberries = the mega batch of pies went to the gym with me and got me 4 kisses, 1 " you are the hottest thing in the gym" and 1 " I love you" ... all from very hot, very fit 20 something year old boys ! .. I rule !!!! lol

teabag - your body takes more that 1 week to fully recover from a 10 mile + run if you don`t take a step back week you`ll risk burning out before the race - trust me you`ll be fine on race day - I ran my last half and trained up to 10 miles - I ran my longest training run for this coming race on Sunday 10.5 miles

runjr  me ...take it easy ????  ... lol you are suppo

macd yup I`m back at me regular gym with my boys ! I miss them on these long weekends - they are such sweet hearts !

Cara my folks are moaning about the weather too - they live in Wales so it`s probabrly even wetter !

Dari Sounds like you had a great run - amazing what a little water will do for you !! Don`t  mind me on the 100 push up challange - My trainers are all about the basics so I decided to follow this program to see if I could get to 100 push ups with out stopping - I`m also a little crazy about weight training - I like my muscles ! Now if you can figure out a way for me to get the pies to you i`ll happily take the sauce !!

misswendy - glad you safe .. white peaches .. bland .. noted !

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

chilidogbeagle - oh wow sorry to hear you got knocked down, but atleast not bitten. That's crazy go running and you have that happen to you. Great job on 8 and no dogs, Sweet.

teabag259 - very true, stand your ground and they won't look at you like you're prey. I thought just chilidogbeagle was an isolated event, but you too. **** I'm screwed I run w/ headphones on so won't know till it happens. It better be one big dog, lol. Gonna go medieval on his ***, haha. Good luck on your upcoming race.

joescoolagain - great job on 3 miles.

runjr - oh no another Cowboy fan, Panthers here let's see what happens this year, woohoo.

macd019 - thank you very much. I'm running the Cannonball half marathon in Greensboro, NC. I just liked the shirt and a fan on Cannonball Run so figured what the ****, lol. Oh wow 67, that would be great. I'm use to mid 90's. I'm glad I run in the middle of the day 3ish, I think it really helps me on hot days and a race, I'm use to it, but it takes getting use to.

chamblin - thank you, I feel Great! I wanted to stop and just walk SO many times and saw so many people doing that or just quitting. I admit my last mile and a half or so I did a slow jog, but I refused to walk and then I saw the finish line and I got a burst of energy and started sprinting, LOL. That 12 mile marker seemed like I was running for 20 minutes to get to it (which was all in my head). Can't wait till my next. I can understand how full marathoners must feel I was dead for a couple of days afterwards.

Mary - great job on the push up challenge, I meant to say something last night.

spicegeek - well **** now kangaroos, lol. What's going on? That's crazy. Very impressive on the challenge and great job on the run. Lol Kiss Queen.

misswendy - I've never ate the jellybeans and found the gels to take all of my water away and then I'm desperate thirsty, how are the beans?

I haven't ran since Sunday and my muscles aren't killing me anymore so tomorrow you think to start training for my next? I only have a little over a month and going on vacation again to California (gotta see if any of you are from there) and will "try" and do what I can while out there. I want to improve on my time if I can. Anyone running any events in or near North Carolina? Everyone have a great night.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

hi all, easy 6.1 tonight. It was really hot and humid.  Traveling the next few days.

dari - great run and no dogs!!!!  Nice quick run.  Can you share the tunes that got you going, I am always looking for good ones. As for intervals I use my garmin.  I understand the question "where did the years go".  With DD off to college it is really different.

misswendy - great run and you are safe with new shoes.

spicegeek - you are doing great with the pushups.  Glad you are back to EC and your gym.

reeb - IMO maybe rest a bit and then at least keep your long runs if possible.

chuck - how are you doing.

take care all.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Hi everyone,

Spicegeek and Don directed me to here and it seems like a great thread. I just ran my first HM in VA Beach this weekend and it was awesome! For full disclosure though I wasn't really trained and did it mostly for fun and the experience - I know - a twisted sense of fun right?? But for those of you who have been to Rock N Roll HM, it was a lot of fun. So I've been running on and off over the years but not seriously or religiously. Got back  into it earlier this year then fall off a bit. Managed to get to a good solid 5 miles or so before the HM and figured I would end up walking a good chunk of it - but thanks to a friend, walking the water stops and just the overall energy of EVERYONE there, I actually ran the whole thing - albeit it was probably tortoise style! At any rate, it gave me the motivation to now want to train more seriously and my crazy girlfriends who convinced me to run in VA Beach already have us signed up for the HM in San Antonio in November. So now I have a goal!

Well just wanted to say a quick hello and introduce myself - looking forward to chatting with you all.

Thanks! Jess

Good job mac.  Sucks about missing out on the cooler weather. Goes back to the old adage..Never put off til tomorrow what you can do today.

Great job chamblin.  You did something that 99.99999% of people can't and wouldn't do.  You should be proud.  Very impressive.

Keep up the good work runjr.

Great work today chilidog.  That is a very nice training time.  Hope your knee is ok.

Keep on trucking misswendy.  New Gear is good!

Congrats on your first HM Jess.  I'm a newbie too.  I'm sure it was a great experience.  Good nluck on your next round of training for San Antonio!

Thanks Joe and Spice for the further advice.  I think you guys are right.  I am still tired from my 11 miles on Saturday.  I usually recover faster than this.  I figured my slow 5.5 yesterday would ease me back into it..but it hasn't.  I really can't fathom running another long run Friday or Saturday right now.  I just don't feel it right now energy wise.  I think i'll go for an easy 3 miles tomorrow (Wednesday) and then a moderate paced 7 or so Friday.  My energy level is so poor right now that my weight training is lackluster thus far this week too.  Due to my schedule this week I missed my one totally off day so this may play into it.  But I will be off Saturday and Sunday exercise wise so that should hopefully recharge my batteries.  I'm happy to hear from you more experienced runners that 11 miles or so is as long as I have to go on my training runs.  based on how this last one made me feel i dont think i want to do 2-3 long runs more before my HM.  I guess I just have to trust the leg strength that I have already built up.  Being new to this it's tough!  ?:|

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Morning everyone,

I took my rest day today - I had a committee meeting for my canoe club yesterday evening and didn't get home until nearly 11:30pm so the thought of getting up early to run was not appealing.

Tomorrow I think I will do a tempo run as i've not done one of those for a while...

Runjr - Good job with your intervals and easy run too! We don't actually get as much rain as you'd think by all the films! Actually the South East where I live is usually relatively dry - for about 3 years we had bans on using hosepipes and sprinklers and they were even talking about switching off all water to houses and making everyone use standing pipes in the streets due to not enough rain and low stores in the reservoirs! Don't think we'll be having that problem for a while...

Dari - Glad you didn't have a dog problem on your 8 miles... That's really speedy by the way! The secret of intervals is definitely a Garmin! You can actually program them in to it so that it beeps whenever you're supposed to speed up / slow down, but usually I just watch the time i've been running for. Sometimes I use the lap button to record my stats over the exact intervals, but usually only for longer ones...

Misswendy - hope you get home soon, but glad you managed to fit in shopping and running still We have rain all week too so i'm with you on those wet runs!

Spicegeek - the south east has had the best of the weather so I can only imagine how others feel in the wetter areas of the UK. I just want some sunshine! Great job on your push up challenge! I like the sound of blueberry and raspberry pie - I know what i'm going to be shopping for at the supermarket this week

Reeb - Isn't it amazing what you can get through with will power and determination! Take it easy for the rest of this week - if you feel up to it go for an easy recovery run... maybe 3 or 4 miles at a really easy pace and see how you feel... you don't want to push again too soon as you'll just end up feeling more tired. When is your vacation?

Jess - welcome and congratulations on your first HM! You are braver than me running it on 5 miles! You now have a PB to break and i'm sure you'll be there in no time with a bit of training! Post often about whatever you like - we chat about many things as well as running

Teabag - I think you have learnt a lesson about trying to do too much Resting is an important part of training so take your runs really easy until you feel stronger again, and cutback this week so that you can go long again next week. Also, what was your pace like when you did 11 miles? Maybe you ran this too fast? I know that's what i've done before - I was running 10 miles at sub 10mm pace where as now I try to run them 10:40 pace fastest. If I feel good i'll up the pace the last few miles but that allows me to recover well.

Enough from me and time to get my work done

Happy running all,

Cara

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Hey everyone, I had a great run this morning. I ran 3 miles on my hill route. On the 3 mile route there's only one hill. Ran it in 25:42 this morning. It's 80 with humidity at 84% at 4 in the morning, please, bring on Fall weather. That lay off I had makes it hard to run in the heat after getting use to the AC!

Came home yesterday and looked up stairs and seen a young girl wearing one of my old karate studio shirts. I said hey where did you get that shirt and she said hey Mr. Chuck, you use to be my instructor. I was shocked, it was one of my little girls I had not seen sense she was 10. After she said her name though I remembered her. She use to come in on crutches because she had a tumor in her calf but she would put them down and go through class. She was close to getting her Black Belt and didn't let a tumor stop her from getting it. I told her thats why I remembered her. Great Young Lady!

Runjr I am doing good. My Long runs need to start coming up, only at 5 right now. Other than that my running is starting to come back. If the storms would stay away maybe I'll get a long run in this weekend.

Well off to work I go! Oh a quick dog story for me. My son was teaching me to run long distance, I ran 400 in track so I didn't know how to run 3 miles and he was showing me how and to run hills. I had just ran over this hill and Chad had to break off in the woods for a sec. 2 dogs came running at me, the owner was yelling at them but 1 kept comming. I stopped and  here comes Chad , without breaking stride kicks the dog in the mouth and keeps going and yells back at me to come on. The dog ran back to the owner and I took off to catch Chad. I was impressed. Wasn't for him I would of been bitten.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Hey all!

misswendy, glad to hear you are safe. Hope you have made it home, or do soon! New shoes & shorts are always nice. What color(s)?

spicegeek, it sounds like your boys are proving that "way to a man's heart" saying lol. Good 5 miles... are you tapering yet?

Reeb, 67 is warm to me after a couple weeks of lows in the 50s. I'm always done running before sun-up on weekdays, and start my weekend runs then too... I need to do some daytime running in the next 6 weeks so I'm somewhat acclimated for my race. It would have to be some shirt to get me to sign up for a half lol. You should find nice places to run in CA (if you're looking!).

runjr, nice easy run! It's hot & humid here, but t-storms are supposed to move in today & tomorrow, and then more pleasant temps. I bet DW will be lonely with you traveling and DD at school. Good luck to all of you on the adjustment!

Jess, welcome! I agree w/Carayou're braver than me to run a half without more training! Sounds like you're well on your way to being ready for SAgood luck!

teabag, right you are... I got a humid 71 for procrastinating yesterday. I know, the southerners would take that in a heartbeat... Sounds like you could use a couple days of rest. Hope your energy returns soon!

Cara, enjoy your rest day!

Chuck, your 3 in the heat/humidity this morning were much speedier than mine! Sounds like you are doing well. Neat story about the girl in the shirtshe sounds awesome. Scary dog story!hope that's not a tactic I ever need to use!

Joe, enjoy your rest day! Mid-90s, ugh! My 3 was sweaty at 71 this morning. I'm kind of hoping for rain (light) to run in tomorrow. Our lawn needs it too.

Everyone have a good one!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

hey everyone:

no run today too hectic with getting DS out door to 1st day of senior year of HS, coninciding nicely with Chili, the amazing beagle taking off through the woods sans leash and human attached.  Tonight is training group again - Yeah!

I'm going to look into getting a Garmin today.

runjr - if I told you what was on my iPod, I'd have to kill you;)  My son took one look at my playlist and said, "you are such a freak..."  He actually highjacked it back on April Fools Day and loaded it full of garbage like Air Supply, Barry Manilow - "Mandy", Christopher Cross - "Sailing", to name a few... just to liven up my run at the gym!   I actually had to give him props for finding such #$%$# music and taking the time to load it.  It was all stuff way before his time and clearly required some research into what sucked when I was younger.  If I could only harness his power for good...

I will tell you that "Eye of the Tiger" is not on it.  I saw a guy running on a treadmill at the gym last week singing along to that song OUT LOUD, and I'm just immature enough where I was laughing so hard I had to walk back into the locker room.

Hope everyone has a great day today.
