Guess we can't talk about Tigger anymore now that he is here in alter ego.  Just kidding'

Thanks Ribs.  I'm a Chiefs fan so my season is already over.  Looking for a bandwagon to ride.

Fred - speedy

Jim ?   100 degrees at that time of day?  Too hot!

Resting today.

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - September

Ks, thanks, the knee of many colors is just bruised, probably half a parentheses worth. I was on my own today and headed out on the bike with no real plan. I rode to South Mountain and decided to try the 4 mile climb to the gap. I froze on the way down. The weather was beautiful so I continued along the base of the mountain toward another gap, a much easier one. At that point I was only about 25 miles from Gettysburg, a goal destination. The road is seriously undulating through beautiful orchards supplying many applesauce producers you would recognize. "If you don't think you can, you won't." suddenly popped into my head. 2 points if you remember who gave that advice. After many ups and downs, I made it to Gettysburg, called my husband and asked for a ride home. Nice guy that he is, he drove the 35 miles to fetch me after suggesting how I should get home. Thank goodness for gears. 55 miles, avg. 15 mph.

It was my consolation ride since I couldn't run the 1/2 I had hoped to today. I'll try for a Thanksgiving 5k or 10k. I don't want to just take up space and use air on a route.

Waiting for the race report(s).

It wasn't as hot as expected and things turned out pretty good in 10-miler. I ended up running 1:05:30 with about as good of pacing as I can remember. Fastest mile was 6:31 and slowest was 6:35, with first 5 miles in 32:46 and last 5 in 32:44. Temp was 77 degrees at finish with no clouds from the start but it never really bothered me. I'd done several practice runs during the heat of the day in San Jose (85-95 F) which I think helped a lot.

Nice race Jim.  Very speedy.  Glad temps came down for your race.   5.75 easy miles this morning.  Either will run a fartlek tonight or ez.  Maybe  a speed type workout in the morning instead of tonight.  It will be determined by temp this evening more than anything.   Only suppose to hit 91 today and chance of thunderboomers.

Go Ribs.

A fast and steady race for you Jim.  How did you make out OA and AG?

Euphie, you didn't say it was somebody on the forum.  This time I will guess it was Raider.  Sounds like something he would say.

5 miles fairly slow for me today, 16:30's.  If I don't take a day off this week I could have a 40-mile week!   Spareribs

Close, Ribs.  Take a day off, I'll do those miles for you.  Have you thought about just doing what feels good and seeing how that tallies?

Fred, I've been meaning to mention the egrets and heron I see as I get further off the busy routes.  I'm sure I'll crash one of these days while watching a heron I've startled take flight.  I can't wait to start running more on some of these roads I've found.

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - September

I think I managed just under 15 k in just under 2 hrs about 3 months back.  I was really motoring!  On the piriformis thing....I spend a good deal of time stretching my hips in several directions and I no longer have problems.  I've also gone back to a heel/toe foot strike, which feels more comfortable, but I have a difference between my two sides.  Right foot seems quite comfortable and natural but left foot lands a little flatter and has less pushoff.  Kind of like I was affected by a stroke on that side.  So I spend a lot of time practicing a better heel/toe foot strike, with a really good pushoff.

Monday was a TM day at work.  10 min walking warmup at 7%, followed by 45 min run at 2% followed by 25 min walking cooldown at 7%.  Today will be something similar, but hopefully 60 min run.  My weight has dropped below 200 lbs for the first time in several years thanks to all the paddling last week, but my wrists are still stiff and prone to falling asleep.

Thanks Ribs...and thank you too, Euphie, Fred, KS.  I won the old man's AG and was 33/460 OA. I still have sore quads this morning. Nice week you are having!

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - September

Way to go "old Man"    7.5 miles this morning for me.  At .5 miles I ran into a training partner and then ran 2.5 more with him.  Then 3-4 miles of strong fartlek including attacking hills, and then cool down.   oa pace just 8 flat but the fast part was quality for me.  Very humid but cloud cover kept sun at bay.   I think I'll add a brisk 5-6 miler in Thurs nite as my long runs this week are 15 or less.

Good runs and workouts to ya

Re: 50 Plus Training and Racing - September

This week is going super for me so far, but I admit that just walking around the parks is kind of boring, so today I went to the Y and tried the elliptical.

I'm kind of on a high right now but a bit confused.  First the results:  60 minutes on the elliptical plus two miles walking on the indoor track at 16s.  The elliptical did not have the mile/distance feature but did have the HR which I was careful to watch.  I was generally in the 121 to 128 range, but when i would adjust the resistance up or speed it up, it would go over 140 and then I got nervous and would ease it back.  Do you think it is fair to count 60 elliptical minutes as four miles?  Anyway, I felt super on that machine, like I was alive for the first time since the surgery, breathing, sweating, almost like running.  I think I may do the elliptical on alternate days.  I see the cardiologist on Friday and hope to get some guidance from him re HR.   What HR range do you guys think would be helpful for daily training?  (I am interested in everyone's opinions except Euphie's!)   Spareribs

I'll take advice (even from Euphie!!)

Ribs - no advice from me but I was thinking this might be more satisfying for you as it is closer to running than walking.  Were you using your arms as well?  How did that affect your chest?

Go Ribs
