Organizing a Triathlon

I'm interested in hosting a Triathlon for a Charity.  Does anyone have a refernce material or a framework of all the tasks that need to be done?

Re: Organizing a Triathlon

Hello, I recently organized my first tri athlon and it was a success! One of the factors was that we marketed it as a "benefit" triathlon for our local military. By doing this we had a huge participation base and were able to get donations for posters, tshirts and volunteers much easier. Things to watch for: keep track of cost, all costs so you are sure to pay back the facility costs. Make sure no one else is running a triathlon on the same day and that the charity you are partnering with is able to share the costs with you.

I went online and looked at other groups that have run triathlons in the past and used what I could from each one for information. A big plus was to hold a participant meeting two days prior to review map and answer any questions.

Good luck!

Event Promotion, volunteers, and website managmeent are some of your biggest tasks.  A good sponsor letter will help you get some donations ahead of time.  Since you only need to save $ for promotion for the next year, find a charity to benefit you that might also benefit from the exposure.

The Duathlon I co-chair is the Columbus Duathlon www.columbusduathlon.com

If the charity you link up with is a Non-profit, google has TONS of tools available to you through google grants and google checkout among others.  I set up my website on blogger but they do have some others.  Active does a good job with their website for registration and stuff.

Timing is a difficult item, and it depends upon the size of your race.  A small race of less than 200 people, you'll likely find bibs and/or markers to be the best way to identify runners and just write the information down as they cross.  Bigger than that and you better be ready with a chip timing solution.

I attach a sample donor letter for reference...
