bra's and sports bra's

Ok...here's my problem, even after losing 45 lbs I still have a very large chest (DD). I am still very uncomfortable while running because I still have to wear a regular bra underneath my sports bra to help control the bounce!! Every time I run I am rubbed raw underneath and on the insides of my chest, and this week they have actually started to bleed while I'm running, and when I'm finished my bra and sports bra are bloody. I have already lost over 14% body fat, and haven't lost anything in my chest for the last couple months now, but still continue to lose everywhere else. My questions: Does this mean I will not lose anymore in the chest area, and is there a special kind of bra and sports bra I should be looking for, for instance a specific brand, that will help stop the bleeding and rubbing, and bouncing? I love running, but my chest is really getting in the way.  The rest of my body is now small, what more can I do to shrink my chest more? Thanks to anyone who can help!!

Re: bra's and sports bra's

I had similar problems to yours. A regular bra was not meant to be used for intense exercise, & therefore, you get the rubbing & chafing. I also think that "doubling up" contributes to the problem. I like two different models of the Moving Comfort bras. I was able to "cut back" to only wearing one bra once I switched to these. There's still a slight bit of bounce (not sure you can totally eliminate that), but not much & no pain afterward. My favorite is the Maia, but it is a little lumpy under my clothes and you can't adjust the straps. It's VERY supportive (has underwires) though & doesn't give the "uniboob" look that you get from some sports bras. I also like the Fiona. It looks nicer under clothes than the Maia, but you do have the issue of the "uniboob" look with this one. There are no underwires & the straps are adjustable. These two models are not quite as expensive a some of the higher end sports bras. I've purchased both types at Academy. Regular price for both is around $35 each. I have found discontined colors on the clearance rack at Academy for as low as $10 each. I've also found them discounted at www.sierratradingpost.com. I suggest going to your local sporting goods store & trying them on. Maybe one or both will work for you. One more pointer... This may sound silly, but I always jump up & down in the fitting room when I try on a new type of sports bra to make sure I'm going to get the support I need.

Re: bra's and sports bra's

I am far from having this problem, but do have some bustier friends. A couple of them wear two sports bras, not a regular bra, or a sports bra and a tank with a built-in bra. I have one friend who actually wears a sports bra and leotard and swears by it. Every so often I receive a catalog in the mail from National Running Center (I think is what they're called) but they mark what bra tops work best with bust sizes.

Hi Carey

Like you, I am rather large chested (FF) and i found that apparently there is a belief out there that larger girls should not run....however, i finally found some good bras for running.  I go to figleaves (www.figleaves.com) and buy their Shock Absorber Max Sport crop top and found that has worked the best of all the sports bras i've tried over the years.  If you have a good place locally, i would also recommend getting professionally fitted for a bra - something like 80% of all women wear the wrong size bra and if you can do that, you might get some good advice.

Re: bra's and sports bra's

Hey, hey. I, too, have (or should I say had) this problem. I'm a 36DD and had to run w/ 2 sports bras. It drove me CRAZY!! I tried the CW-X by mail order but had to send them back because they were too small. BUT...after reading some boards about this very problem I decided to try the "Fiona" style bra by Moving Comfort. Excellent! The straps have velcro and make adjustments a breeze. I bought them just last week and I'm in LOVE I tell ya!! Not many women like the "uniboob" look but personally I don't care. I'm looking for NO BOUNCE!! I was ready to try an ace bandage for Pete's sake!! I used the bra last week and it was great--I even ran longer because I was SO comfortable! I bought them from a "Road Runner" store here in NJ but they have a catalog and of course their web site.

Good luck and may you run great distances in your new bras!!!

Re: bra's and sports bra's

I saw the reply about "negative effects" in the other thread too.  I can't think of anything that should be an issue once you get any support problems resolved.  Prior to me finding some good sports bras that worked for me, my upper back hurt sometimes after a run, but that's no longer a problem.  I guess you could do some damage to the breast tissues from excessive bouncing, but again, a good bra takes care of that.  I've been running for two years & haven't noticed any negative effects on my body related to bust size.  I can't imagine what that person was talking about.  Maybe they will get on here & clarify what they meant.

Hey Carey. NoI don't think I ever heard of big ***** causing negative effects other than possibly giving you two BLACK EYES if you wear ill-fitting bras!! LOL!! I run w/ my niece (who runs as graceful as a gazelleme, a waterbuffalo) and I would joke around and hold them while I ran but think to myself, "Wow--this is what it must feel like to have no bounce."  But this bra actually accomplishes that. FINALLY I can concentrate on my run not whether I'm going to be bouncing all over creation (which is worse w/ PMS!!). All that bouncin' can wear a girl OUT!!

Well, good luck and happy running. Let me know how you make out!

Re: bra's and sports bra's

Once you have a good, supportive sports bra, I would suggest getting an anti-chafing skin protectant stick. It looks a lot like a stick of deodorant and you can put it wherever skin rubs against clothing or against skin (eg, inner thighs). It really helps a lot and I think that most sporting good stores should have it. Running stores will definitely have it. Happy running!
